Was always my favourite Kurosawa film, but it has been many a year since I've seen it. Probably a VHS recording off TV. Kurosawa has always been one of my favourite filmmakers, so it seems silly to rate them. Would love to see it on blu-ray so that I could consider it in relation to the Yojimbo films and Seven Samurai, which I've seen most recently. Meanwhile, Rashomon is sitting here waiting to be watched very soon... |

My most unique film going experience was "Fight Club." Lots of groans and shouts in anger. About 10 people walked out during the first half of the film, near the end one guy got up in a rage to leave and was screaming, "this is f***ing bull***! this isn't a movie, it's garbage!" |

The Lost Boys has the best soundtrack, though! Last edited by The Great Owl; 01-06-2013 at 04:09 PM. |

I definitely agree with the second half of this. I personally prefer Badlands and The New World, actually. Although after recently rewatching The Tree of Life, I might actually prefer it to The New World now.

The New World is my least favorite Malick film, but it's still a million times better than the best work from most directors.
I love how, in a general sense, Malick's movies focus on the beauty of nature, as if to demonstrate that the natural world will always continue to flourish, indifferent to the tragedies and struggles of human lives in its midst. If I go to war and am killed by a bullet, if I become a convict on the run, if I lose my job, if I fall in and out of love, or if I attend the funeral of a relative, the leaves outside my apartment window will still look beautiful. When I was younger, I interpreted The Thin Red Line to mean that war is an affront to the natural world, and that we are destroying nature with our conflicts. The more that I view the film, however, the more I decide that nature is simply indifferent and continues to go on, one way or another, despite the calamities on Guadalcanal, because, in a sense, war is actually a part of nature. I'm not sure where I'd rank Days of Heaven, honestly. I do believe, however, that Malick's work tends to get better the further he strays away from a linear narrative (his post Days work).
