Disagree, genre b-movie it may be, but there's a lot more going on in Basic Instinct than that. Ditto Showgirls, which I definitely preferred to Robocop.

A fun review of Showgirls I've always liked from Slant Magazine

Would be great to see some Verhoeven on CC in the BD era. I've yet to see any of his pre-Hollywood stuff, but do hear lots of good things about Soldier of Orange.

Yup, Sharon Stone crossing her legs is always the second thing that comes to mind when I think of Basic Instinct. In fact, sometimes the way Michael Douglas almost gleefully sank his teeth into his scenes pushes Sharon Stone down to third.

I dunno, it definitely hasn't aged well and it wasn't exactly high concept to begin with but it has a weird nostalgiac charm beyond just the sex.

No. *sob* My Criterion DVD of this movie is held in high esteem in my collection.

I bought 12 Angry Men today with a mix of Best Buy Upgrade & Save and Reward Points. So glad to have upgraded one of my favorite Criterions and one of my favorite movies in general. I remember reading the teleplay as a report assignment in my high school freshman English class. Last year, I posted a rave review of the Criterion DVD of 12 Angry Men on my Facebook page, and my high school freshman English teacher, who is a Facebook friend, chimed in about how happy he was that I was still interested in the story. Pretty funny.
For some reason, this is not a movie that screams out "high definition" to me, but I just had to have this Blu-ray for so many reasons.

The live teleplay is one of the supplements. It's rough (duh, it's what? sixty year old videotape?) but it's awfully cool and it really adds a lot to the package.

It's great to have! I watched it when I had my DVD copy, but I'll be going through it again.

Desperately? He directed what? Thirteen features?

They've already released four and they're all but certain to release Le Samourai at some point.

I would love to see them upgrade Bob le Flambeur and Le Doulos. I'd also like to see a US release of Le Silence de la Mer.

But we're not in exactly in a drought.

Dammit: you deleted the desperately while I was typing this...or did I imagine it?

I agree. I have the Eureka release of Le Silence de La Mer (Region Free). Great transfer, it is one of his best early films. Bob le Flambeur or Le Samourai would be a great announcement if they are released in April.

I am curious to know who has the right for Un Flic. I am surprised that criterion has not released this film yet in any format.

That's good to know. I've had that in my Amazon.uk wishlist for a while. If I ever talk myself into an order it just moved up a couple notches.

As an aside, I really find it hard to click that final 'confirm order' button on orders there - it's impossible to shake the feeling a US release will be announced the next day. Being a cheap bastard doesn't help either, I suppose

Speaking of which - and this is probably as good a place to ask as any - is there any backdoor way to use Amazon US gift cards at Amazon.uk?

I love my Blu-rays of Army of Shadows and Le Cercle Rouge, and an upgrade of my Leon Morin, Priest DVD is forthcoming. Still, I'm going to keep harping on them until they release Blu-rays of the others. Especially Le Samourai.

We need more French gangster stuff on Blu, period.
Rififi, yes please.
Classe Tous Risques, yes please.
Are there any other fans of Touchez Pas Au Grisbi here? This movie completely and utterly rocks my face. It's probably one of my top ten Criterion flicks.

Yep.

You can't go wrong with Melville.

Did he create anything that isn't worth watching?

I think not!

What's wrong with MoC's release? It's region free.

I was blown away by Rififi. I went in expecting a typical b movie film noir, and it was a masterpiece.
I'm also hoping for Melville's Le Samourai to be released on Blu soon, such a great film. I wasn't crazy about Le Cercle Rouge, but Army of Shadows was solid.

Oh, there's nothing wrong with it. When I said I'd like to see a US release it's primarily because I'm a cheap bastard.

I've got a region-free player so there's nothing wrong with Arrow's Rififi either.

I'm just a cheap bastard.

I am too, but I had to get L'Age D'Or (Bunuel), Alice (by Jan Svankmajer), Sunrise (Murnau), Institute Benjamenta (Quay Brothers), and Le Silence De La Mer. I was fortunate to get these blu rays on sale. I have a feeling they won't be released where in the states.

I commend BFI and MoC in releasing some great titles. Some of their releases are as good as criterion releases. I am wondering if these two companies combined release more titles than criterion in a year.

I really need a region free blu ray player.

I'd buy more Melville on blu for sure.

I just find it hard to call for more Melville when someone Resnais only has 1 Criterion blu. Heck, I'd love to see more Kiarostami on blu, too.

Rififi already has a blu-ray release from Arrow in the UK which is stunning and comes with 96 minutes of special features. Well worth importing.
