I thought it was common knowledge. I found out maybe 7 or 8 years ago.

Well, I've only contacted the address twice to get replacement discs and never had cause to wonder. I figured other people may handle the mail but I never really had a reason to doubt a man by that name existed, somewhere in the organization!

Contrast that with "I have a degree in English Literature and I can't get a job in my field". Yawn. And it's doubly boring because in a lot of ways this artificial discontent with the job market comes off as code for 'why can't somebody just pay me to blog'.

Gotcha, and yeah I know quite a few people who took degrees like that. Arguably, my undergrad degree, history, is one many consider to be quite useless. However, in some caseason, some " useless degrees" did start out as useful when the student started taking it. Also, I think There's a bit of an issue with mobility, as some of these degrees are highly sought after in other locations, but graduates may not want or have the finances to move to make their degree useful. Of course, that depends on the person as well. Not everyone who gets an English lit degree is going to sit on their duff waiting for someone to hand them a job.

I also think a lot of issues stem from primary and secondary education, as many schools are underfunded, overcrowded, and have many teachers that aren't actually teaching subjects they studied. When I was in high school 10 years ago, We had to take stuff like fine arts and other BS classes, as mandated by the province, in order to graduate. Thrun also focused more on kids "expressing themselves" in English, rather than teaching them how to write properly. A lot of kids passed with high grades they didn't deserve, as teachers didn't really care to check and see if that paper they handed in was bought or not. I know not all scholar are bad, nor are all teachers, but where I went to school, it was like that.

So today's watch for me was Repulsion.

Wow, what a great approach to the genre. It reminded me of Rosemary's Baby in the way the film lures you in slowly and as soon as you get comfortable the gates of hell are opened up. There were some great visuals that popped out that I was not expecting, notably,

[Show spoiler]the scene where the light switch is flipped and the apartment wall cracks open to reveal something insect like underneath.

Very creepy without going to the gross out factor so many contemporary films employ. The theme of cracks appearing throughout the film was excellent foreshadowing as well.

Very happy I picked this up.

So I'm sure this has already been questioned and answered, but does anyone know why Eclipse is DVD and not Blu-ray?

On a side note I hope Cox's Repo Chick gets the same treatment.

One of my favorite things about both Rosemary's Baby and Repulsion is the way he completely isolates both leads despite the fact that they're on the streets of two densely populated world capitols. He cheats a little bit in Repulsion in that he has the streets a little more deserted as the film goes on. But there's no cheating in Rosemary's Baby though - he's got her completely cut off and alone outside the Time-Life building at high noon.

It's brilliant.

The point of the Eclipse line is releasing titles that either can't be adequately restored (because there aren't any decent original source materials) or that wouldn't financially justify the expense of a full-blown restoration.

It's been a long time since I saw Repulsion. Have it on DVD but it's another one I've been waiting to pick up on blu and I might wait to give it a watch until I can upgrade it. Rosemary's baby on Blu was really impressive. So rare that directors can pace movies like that nowadays, and just let the tension build slowly.

Just walking down memory lane. Im missing about half of my Criterion LD's I owened. Must have sold them when they went to DVD. Just down to 17 left. PULP FICTION, SEVEN, EVITA, THE KILLER, BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, THE GAME, SUPERCOP, SLING BLADE, THE ENGLISH PATIENT, HALLOWEEN, THE FISHER KING, TRAINSPOTTING, BOOGIE NIGHTS, DEAD PRESIDENTS, TIME BANDITS, BOYZ N THE HOOD and MAN BITES DOG. Wouldn't mind having some on CC blu.

I recently upgraded my copy of Herzog's Rescue Dawn to Blu-ray when I found a cheap used copy. It's one of Herzog's most accessible films, but I love it. Funnily enough, Rescue Dawn is more "realistic" than the source documentary, Little Dieter Needs to Fly.

Agreed. It's actually my favorite Christian Bale film of all.

Rescue Dawn looks awesome on Blu-ray because of the jungle footage. Herzog makes the jungle into a villain all its own.

Yeah, I gave it a chance several years ago when it was first released.

I didn't think it would turn out to be good, but it was fantastic. I love war movies, and the whole concept of being a POW and eventually planning a escape is fantastic!

Yeah I miss many laserdiscs I still have a bunch of my Criterion ones Ive decided I won't part with. I may not play them, some I have just for the commentary tracks, or simply nostalgia sake.
