I'll tell ya where. Someplace warm. A place where the beer flows like wine. Where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. I'm talkin' bout a little place called... As-pen.

I am currently in the process of bidding on "And Everything Is Going Fine", "Fat Girl", "Ivan's Childhood", "Tokyo Drifter", and "Vanya On 42nd Street". I'm hoping to score them for about $15-$17 each. I bought The Mikado for like $14 on eBay the other day. I'm still waiting for it to come in. Currently these are the films I'm most interested in for the sale: 1. Beauty And The Beast 2. David Lean Directs Noel Coward 3. For All Mankind 4. Godzilla 5. Late Spring 6. Orpheus 7. Pina 8. Stagecoach 9. Tin Drum 10. Topsy-Turvy 11. Two-Lane Blacktop |

Also, I do not see the other two Dardennes films on your list (Rosetta and La Promesse) so if you do not already have them, I would recommend them as well. |

"David Lean Directs Noel Coward" has been at the top of my list since the Criterion sale last October. I'm surprised I didn't buy it then, but I will definitely get it during the Criterion sale. As far as "House" is concerned, I have been on and off with it. People say it's the Japanese "Scooby-Doo" but I don't know. Maybe another sale for that one lol. |

I bagged some huge Criterion Blu-rays today during my hunting trip.
The Night of the Hunter Walkabout The Game The Man Who Knew Too Much The 39 Steps The Lady Vanishes I took a bunch of old DVDs to a used store to sell, and ended up with a lot more money than I expected. I used that money to buy all these Criterions at a Best Buy down the street with Upgrade & Save coupons. In truth, I owned all these on DVD (except for The Man Who Knew Too Much) and sold the DVDs at the used store today with the intent of upgrading the titles to Blu-ray. The used store gives a good amount of cash for Criterion titles, so they almost paid for themselves. Ever since I bought my Blu-ray player, I've been psyched to upgrade The Night of the Hunter, Walkabout, and The Game. So happy that I did that today. A couple of non-Criterion titles as well. Fantastic Four/Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer two-pack Into the Blue Yeah, I know. I love these movies. Insert laughter and finger-pointing here. |

I have been rewatching the Fantastic Four movies over the last day or so, and while they aren't stellar cinema, they are better than I remembered them to be, and better than they get credit for. As a huge Twin Peaks fan I find it endlessly interesting that Mark Frost wrote/cowrote the screenplays.

As for TOKYO DRIFTER and BRANDED TO KILL (best viewed in that order), they're both heavily satirical New Wave film noir pictures but made in Japan, loaded with visual style, and having a lot of fun with the expected conventions of the genre. And NIGHT OF THE HUNTER and WALKABOUT and the Hitchcocks are also excellent choices if you haven't already got them! |

Nothing would make me happier than if my Best Buy started carrying more than just a dozen of the popular Criterion titles. Great haul nonetheless.
The Game transfer is fantastic! Quote:

got the david lean set from a trade here, and have seen all but the last film, the 1st 2 films in the set are amazing, and the the 3rd one is good but i just wasn't in the mood to watch it, all in all though very pleased with the set
have also been slowly watching the 6 moral tales dvd set and that set so far is freaking amazing, well worth the 9.99 or how ever much it was during the time when frys.com had the price mistake. might be my favorite criterion dvd set i have next to the war trilogy one. |

A couple of months ago, French magazine Les Années Laser conducted an very interesting and in-depth interview with company president, Peter Becker.
You can read it here A very extensive interview. He also mentioned that Ken Russell's The Devils is in the pipeline, but it will not be released until next year. [Show spoiler] Since it's French article, I used Google Translate to translate text. Last edited by Akijama; 01-31-2013 at 10:54 PM. |

How does La Promesse stack up with Rosetta? I have seen both Rosetta and TKWAB, I thought they were both very similar in terms of structure, I did not like the later very much but I really liked Rosetta. La Promesse has been on my list for a while now.

Steering this ship back on course... In my neck of the woods, there are a lot of Best Buy stores within a ten-mile radius in one part of the city. The Night of the Hunter box was all jacked up at one of the stores, with a dent in the box and some bad creasing in the inner cardboard sleeve. I drove down the street to the next Best Buy, where The Night of the Hunter was in flawless condition. Still, I wish that the Blu-ray of this outstanding film came in one of the more sturdy plastic cases. I'm pumped about watching The Night of the Hunter this weekend. When I owned the Criterion DVD of this film, I decided that it's near impossible to wear DVDs out, because, if so, I would have worn that DVD out a long time ago. It's going to be a blast to watch this movie in the Blu-ray format at long last. |

5. Branded To Kill - Bonkers Japanese assassin film. Do I like it? Check my avatar ![]() 15. If... - Really good boarding school drama. Malcolm McDowell. 'Nuff said. 18. Kuroneko - Beautiful and atmospheric Japanese ghost story. 19. Late Spring - Ozu. Heartbreaking. Lovely. 20. Le Beau Serge - Really good drama about a young man returning to his home town. Works well with its companion piece Les Cousins. 21. Le Havre - Strange and sweet story. 23. Music Room - Exceptional Indian film about hubris, loss, and the passing of an era. 24. Orpheus - Starts a bit slow, but really interesting interpretation of the Orpheus story. 28. Rules Of The Game - Black comedy about pre-WWII France. Upstairs/Downstairs hijinks. One of my favourite films. A regular in Sight & Sound's Top Ten lists. 31. Stagecoach - Seminal John Ford/John Wayne western. Still exciting. 32. Still Walking - Lovely story of a family's dynamics, dealing with loss, infidelity and all that stuff. A good companion piece with Summer Hours. 33. Summer Hours - I'm a big fan of Olivier Assayas and I loved this film. You've already got Carlos, so have a look at a more sensitive story. This was a blind-buy for me and I've probably watched it 3 times. Just beautiful. 37. Tokyo Drifter - See description of Branded to Kill, but in colour ![]() 40. Two-Lane Blacktop - Most "cool" films dream of being this cool. Existential road film? Maybe. Or maybe just an incredibly cool film about fast cars, nameless drivers, and Warren Oates. Warren Oates ![]() |

I'm really looking forward to seeing this in the Blu-ray format!
I debated upgrading this movie for a while, because the Criterion DVD that I bought in September before I owned a Blu-ray player looked fantastic, and I figured that any difference between the two on my television would be negligible. In recent weeks, though, I've done the DVD vs. Blu-ray comparison on my 32'' a couple of times with my movies that come in the combo packs, and the difference, while small, is still very much noticeable to the side of improvement with the Blu-ray picture. Since The Game is my favorite David Fincher film of all (Sorry, Fight Club), I ultimately felt a need for the upgrade. |
