It's not really Criterion related, but it could be good news for some here...
Mathieu Kassovitz's new film, Rebellion (L'ordre et la morale) is finally available on Blu-ray with english subs (in Germany). I can't recommend the film enough, those who have seen and liked La Haine will absolutely love this one too, it's old school Kassovitz again. Brilliant film. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/L-ord...Blu-ray/65279/ |

And by most all accounts the Studio Canal edition of That Obscure Object of Desire is more than satisfactory. I too prefer Repulsion to Rosemary's Baby - its use of location for atmosphere is incredible - but I can agree with the assertion that the former was a dress-rehearsal of sorts for the latter. Hadn't thought of that before, but it's an interesting way to see the two. Last edited by Cinemach; 02-01-2013 at 12:21 PM. |

My copy of Le Silence de la Mer should be arriving in my mailbox anytime now, since I ordered it from Amazon UK a week and half ago. Thanks for the review.
I had a similar reaction to Léon Morin, Priest , because I was underwhelmed during my first viewing, but still gravitated to the in-depth discussions and philosophies presented in the film. It's an intelligent movie that gets better with time. I have not seen a Melville film yet that I dislike. They're all pretty amazing. Sometimes, I think that the universe brought Criterion films to my attention simply so that I could discover Melville's Le Samouraï, Army of Shadows, and Le Cercle Rouge. Those are my three favorites titles and I revisit them more often than any of the others. Les Enfants Terribles is my least-favorite Melville film, but it's still a impressive enough to revisit from time to time. |

I watched my new Blu-ray of Nicolas Roeg's Walkabout last night. Another outstanding transfer of one of my favorite Criterion titles. The Criterion DVD of Walkabout that I upgraded was the older edition from many years ago, so this was my first time seeing the restoration in any format.
Walkabout is so off-the-wall and hauntingly beautiful, especially in the way that the scenes are cross-cut. I love the book page crosscutting during one sequence. Nicholas Roeg always made ingenious use of juxtaposition, and Walkabout is the best example, with the hunting scenes interspersed with butcher shop scenes. I stumbled onto Walkabout several years ago after I bought a DVD of Roeg's incredible horror film, Don't Look Now, and found out about Walkabout by reading up on the other movie online. They're both visually-astounding movies with unique juxtaposition of scenes. (Don't Look Now has an extended love scene that is repeatedly interrupted by shots of the characters dressing afterward.) I wish that Criterion would pick up Don't Look Now as a title. For now, it's oddly amusing that Walkabout and Wake in Fright appear side by side in my Blu-ray collection order. I am not destined to be a salesperson for vacations to the Australian Outback. |

I did not mention it in the post, but I think that it's a masterpiece as well. One of the best DVDs that I own.
Le Doulos and Le Deuxième Souffle are also favorites in my DVD collection. On this note, I highly recommend the Criterion DVD of Claude Sautet's Classe Tous Risques, because it's a great pairing of Lino Ventura and Jean-Paul Belmondo, who were both prominent actors in the Melville films. |

Alfred Hitchcock's Notorious, Rebecca, and Spellbound are selling on Amazon today for $10.49 apiece.
I just ordered all three for $31.47, which qualifies me for free shipping. This looks to be cheaper than the upcoming Hitchcock bundle set with the three movies for $53, and I'd rather have the individual Blu-rays anyway. I have no idea about whether or not Criterion has the rights to these movies anymore to upgrade them to Blu-ray, but I'm not holding my breath. That said, I'll probably see a Criterion announcement for these movies tomorrow, now that I've placed this order...haha. |

Yeah, I hope too Criterion could release those titles, because honestly, I don't like the covers at all! Of course, it's about the films anyway, and things like that shouldn't interfere, but still... |

They do not hold a candle to my Criterion DVD cover of Notorious, but, then again, nothing does. I'll probably sell off that DVD to make room for the Blu-ray, though. |

It's still not a dress rehearsal of any sort, because that would imply he is doing one in preparation for the other. He wasn't. I guess David Lynch's Eraserhead was a dress rehearsal for Twin Peaks, and Michael Mann's Thief was a dress rehearsal for Heat... this can go on all day. It's simply an evolution of each filmmaker to learn off past experiences, happens to them all. Last edited by retablo; 02-01-2013 at 05:53 PM. |
