The Alfred Htichcock films are pretty safe in this regard
The Chaplin films
Topsy-Turvy (one of my favorites in the collection)
Robinson Crusoe on Mars
Paths of Glory (war violence, 1950s style in black and white)
The Red Shoes (great film)
For All Mankind
Twelve Angry Men
Island of Lost Souls
Phantom Carriage (silent film)
David Lean/Noel Coward Box Set
Sweet Smell of Success (been a while since I've seen it, but I don't recall anything in it to offend sensibilities)

There are others, but these are the ones that came to mind
Yes, these and some of the others mentioned in other posts should go over well with most people.

I do recall, however, that TOPSY-TURVY does have a bit of raunchiness and brief nudity, although my 87-year-old mother still likes it, as she loves Gilbert and Sullivan. You may want to go with THE MIKADO instead, if your audience is especially sensitive to nudity. And while DESIGN FOR LIVING is great, it has obvious implications that might still offend the easily offendable. A few might also find ISLAND OF THE LOST SOULS somewhat disturbing unless they're into horror films. There's always THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME, but Criterion only has a DVD on that and the current Blu-ray is from Flicker Alley. Kubrick's THE KILLING is a good suspense thriller with nothing really objectionable, and there's also A NIGHT TO REMEMBER.

Just watched The Man Who Knew Too Much. It was pretty decent. I couldn't help but find myself laughing during several parts of the film. Some of the acting was so unbelievable and corny, but that's how it was back in the day.

I had to put subtitles on for some parts because the English was hard to understand, in my opinion.

Overall, a pretty solid release and a great transfer by Criterion. 4/5

Nope. I had the DVD and got rid of it and I ordered the Blu-ray yesterday. I think Audrey Tautou is beautiful though, hence my choice

Yeah, now that you mention it, I forgot there is a bit of bawdiness in Topsy-Turvy I had forgotten about, but it isn't shocking or otherwise objectionable in the context of the film. It's a great film, and the late Victorian era period details, combined with the superb acting and briliant dialogue, make this one of the best films in the collection, in my opinion.

Yes, I love TOPSY-TURVY as well, and it makes an ideal double-feature with Criterion's THE MIKADO. I got the impression that Mike Leigh actually had the cast do the entire shows for most or all of the operettas excerpted in TOPSY-TURVY because he wasn't sure which portions he would use in the final film. I sure wish a deluxe edition would come out with all those performances as well! (And I hope the footage or at least the recordings still exist somewhere.)

This. I don't get how some films are considered classics when there are elements (ie poor, dated acting) that pull me out of the whole film. It is not just crappy acting either. Another example is Pasolini's films, specifically those in The Trilogy of Life. The poor overdubbing, and fast forwarding of specific scenes just make me scratch my head. The Tin Drum also does the fast forward/Benny Hill thing quite often as well which I just don't understand why the director chose to employ this technique.

I dont think many people consider Hitchcocks 30's work as his best. It's excellent, but the 40's to early 60's is where it's at.

Also, The Trilogy of Life isn't as beloved as other Pasolini, especially early Pasolini.

How does the film itself compare to 39 Steps and Lady Vanishes?

Same here. One of Criterion's (BFI) best transfers of a film from this period. I actually enjoyed TMWKTM as much of more than The 39 Steps or The Lady Vanishes.

Wow I really like those films too. I haven't done this yet, but 39 steps would make a great double feature with NxNW

+1. Jeunet's Delicatessen is a very interesting film too.

Has anybody seen A Very Long Engagement, it sits unwatched by my BD player.

Wow. I've never seen the 1930s version of TMWKTM so I'll need to Netflix the DVD (sadly they don't yet offer it on Blu-ray) soon!

I keep meaning to watch Amelie but it seems too twee, cutesy and... well, French. I probably ought to see it though, right?

Meanwhile, I've been renting all the Criterions I can before the February sale.

I've had A Very Long Engagement on DVD for years and haven't seen it... I was originally interested because of her role in it, but both times I attempted watching it I got through about 10 minutes before switching to something else. I should finish it someday.

If it counts for anything, it made the 1001 movies to see before you die list.

Trust me, you'll definitely like it more than a Wes Anderson flick.

As for the sale, Where exactly is this comin' from?

It was a good movie, don't get me wrong. It kept my interest throughout, but I just found some of it to be humorous.

The transfer was good, especially the PQ.

I want this movie so badly. I would totally order the French Blu-ray but it's Region Locked...and I don't have a Region Free player...

I wanted to add that I would highly recommend this film:

Yeahhh, it's a breezy romantic comedy..but please don't let that stop you...it's really genuinely charming and very enjoyable.

I ordered Coco Before Chanel, Delicacy, and Dirty Pretty Things, but I'll add it to my wish list.

Oh, I thought last year was the first. It certainly would be awesome. Not enough Tarkovsky on my shelf
