This is simply one of the best eras of film. They had the right blend of comedy, mystery, suspense, and many other things. The films nowadays are just lacking and can't live up to the hype these films did.
Make sure you watch Crook's Tour, the Charters and Caldicott spin-off film - heaps of fun

I agree. There is something to be said about being subtle. Her character was all about inner strength and her heroics were not conveyed with any showmanship. It was about fighting with the resources available to you with uncertainty of outcome. That is the reason I love the film so much also, it embraces courage.

There haven't been any Melville films in the CC since 2011.
Maybe when they release Le samouraï on Blu they will release it.

How do you guys have your Criterion Collection set up?

This is mine. I built a new case for my movies a few weeks ago and I store my Criterions on the first three rows on the right side of the case. I hope to fix my case around a bit better because currently it's in shambles due to new additions to my collection, etc. Plus I'd love to find a stand for my LOA set.

I think I'm going to hold off buying DVD Criterions because there is always a possibility of a Blu-ray upgrade. If there wasn't a chance, I'd likely get Missing, a few film-noirs, and the Bergman Trilogy.

Agreed! A great film on it's own and the soundtrack and sound quality are unbelievable! It doesn't hurt that this is likely my favorite Who album.

Nice display iScottie...we just bought a house and it came with a finished basement with a lot of extra space that I want to turn into a built in shelving unit and have no idea as to where I should begin with this...the whole owning a home has been a daunting feeling to say the least...we've rented for sooo many years...I just want it to look as nice as I can. My main idea is for the shelving brackets be hidden and not use those hideous eyesore looking L brackets to hang them. IKEA has seemed like the safest bet. The whole baseement I can do anything to...it's my room/man cave...she is redoing the entire upstairs for her needs...but the basement is my entertainment space!

Many years ago there was a blockbuster that went out of buisness and they were selling their shelves, I picked up 4 and have them stacked (2 rows of 2) and bolted to my wall. I store all my films there. When I bought my flat screen I cut out the shelves on one of them and mounted the TV inside the shelf.

I'll have to grab some pics for clarity.

All the talk of beauties in the Criterion Collection and no mentions of Claudia Cardinale in The Leopard. Tsk tsk.

Great picks, especially Deborah Harry (one of her rare appearances in cinema).

Hey everyone,

I was just wondering if the Days of Heaven criterion blu ray is worth it. I have been trying to slowly buy Malick's filmography and I recently bought The Thin Red Line and The Tree of Life. I absolutely loved both and I was wondering if Days of Heaven is worth a blind buy for this seemingly classic and beautiful film on Blu-ray. I was also wondering if it is worth it to pick up The New World becuase the Blu Ray is very reasonable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Sorry if I am going off topic,

Silent.

Playtime now says its OOP on Criterions site. Not sure if this just happened but get your copies while you can. Although Chungking Express went OOP and I still see it available.

Guilty as charged
She's gorgeous and I love her in The Leopard
Plus, Burt Lancaster and Alain Delon!
It's probably my favourite Criterion film (except I have the BFI blu-ray )

If you like The Thin Red Line and Tree of Life, I would definitely consider both Days of Heaven and The New World as safe buys.
I think they're both incredibly beautiful films. The New World is probably my favourite Malick film. Both blu-rays are very good.

I'd say a definite yes, especially if you're fond of Malick's style of film-making. Beautiful film, beautiful transfer.

I've been in hope that we'd see a release of The New World with the other cuts of the film, and especially since the released one isn't Malick's preferred choice. But since the disc now mostly inhabits discount bins, I don't hold out much hope any more for an updated release. If you want the film, I'd say grab what's available.

The BFI is a great release, and in some of the supplements (heresy alert!) is superior to the Criterion. (Sorry! )

Sure, why not? It's Malick and if you already love his filmmaking already, you shouldn't be disappointed. "Days of Heaven" is my favorite of Malick's films. Probably the most common criticism of the movie is the narration by a 15 year old girl with a very thick NY accent. I think it adds to the style of the movie. "The New World" is Malick's take on the Pocahontas story. It's somewhat slow but also very good.

If you enjoyed the fore mentioned films, I highly recommend Days of Heaven and Badlands (which will be released next month). Great cinematography by Nestor Almendros (there is some debate about who was the true cinematographer) and score (by the maestro Ennio Morricone- inspired by one of my favorite classical music pieces by Saint-Saens). Amazing film overall, one of the best blu ray transfers by criterion (easily in the top 5)

This is my favorite Malick film, but I enjoy all his films equally.

By the way, Jessica Chastain is my favorite actress of today, gorgeous and talented.

Thanks everyone,

I will try to pick these up when I can, starting with Days of Heaven. I will post my impressions about the criterion release and the film itself when I buy the film.

I can't wait to see this, i've heard so many great things.
