On a side note, during the next Barnes 'N Noble sale, I'm going to try to buy some Eclipse sets. |

I've been eyeing the Mizoguchi, Kurosawa and Oshima sets for quite some time. It would be a hell of a score to be able to find these used at a better price point. |

Guess there's no way of tracking down the Criterion rumors. What a spectacular release that could be! Quote:

As far as Eclipse goes, I don't know which ones appeal to me the most yet, as I haven't done much research, but hopefully I'll figure out soon. |

Edit: Ok, I read that incorrectly..you aren't taking 2 days off, you're taking 2 days of them...... Last edited by Hawkguy; 02-08-2013 at 03:33 AM. |

I am really loving the When Horror Came To Shochiku set right now, though. The Living Skeleton is a fine piece of J-horror, and Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell is just...just incredible. Last edited by The Great Owl; 02-08-2013 at 03:41 AM. |

![]() Freshman year I took classes 5 days a week, so a typical day MWF was 9-12, and a typical TTH was 8-2. Talk about overbearing. |

Yours sound short-ish if you're done so soon....mine tend to be 3 to 3 1/2 hours each, so with a wait in between usually, I'm never done in 5-ish hours....tends to be the whole day....which is why I think of it as my 'marathon' of classes, when they're all back-to-back.

I loved those two, but I wasn't a big fan of the other two films....still a very fun set, though.

The Eclipse set of Larisa Shepitko's movies looks amazing. That will probably be my next Eclipse purchase. Last edited by The Great Owl; 02-08-2013 at 04:05 AM. |

Any profession that you choose will be what you make of it. Akira Kurosawa became burned out and tried to commit suicide at one point, but there are several garbage collectors who have fun at their jobs every day. Like others here, I also became immersed in movies during college, although I spent just as much time listening to great music and going to concerts. College was just a great time for the exchange of ideas in general. I never stopped collecting great movies, but I am experiencing the movie preoccupation again right now, of course, as I spend my minor midlife crisis getting into the world of Blu-rays. It's fun. I also needed some down time from my running to let an injury heal. As spring kicks into gear, though, I'll be spending a lot more time outdoors. A few pages back I mentioned that Maggie Cheung was the most beautiful woman in the Criterion Collection.
I just wanted to say, I put on In The Mood For Love late last night for a few scenes and I'm happy to confirm that I was correct: she is the most beautiful in the Collection. That's not to say that the other actresses mentioned aren't gorgeous, but I just wanted everyone to be clear on the facts. |

There's no doubt about it, I'm getting this as soon as a sale hits. The two Oshima films have really stuck with me. As a matter of fact ITROTS is a masterpiece, even if it's too much for some. I find it's sociological take fascinating, as well as how deep it dives into the human desire for more.
I also think Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence is excellent. Oshima brings out the repressed sexuality in what would otherwise be a conventional POW narrative. Which is vital because the film is about depraved, misguided masculinity resulting in annihilation. I can certainly see why people think it's flawed, but the subtext, the flashbacks, and the score create a completely memorable and enriching experience. |
