Was their a disc pressing issue with Ballad Of Narayama? I thought I read that (or heard about it) somewhere, Has it been resolved?

I guess it doesn't matter now anyway if it's one of the titles that's sold out.

Glad to see people are getting Bigger than Life, it's not nearly discussed enough.
I think I'm going to watch that film now that you mention it. I have to finish up Anatomy Of A Murder and then I'm going to jump on that one

Maybe I'll watch Black Moon before bed later.

There is a small 20-second section in which the frame starts to get a slow-motion / blur effect. Pro-B e-mailed Criterion and they explained that that's how the film is.

No need to worry

Thumbs up

Needed to keep it under $100, so with no tax and free shipping, I was able to order:

The Ballad of Narayama
A Hollis Frampton Odyssey
People on Sunday
Pina
Vanya on 42nd Street

I can't decide if this was a good day or a bad day to sleep late.

I'm not *really* all that itchy about anything right now but probably would have bitten on three of the newer releases (that are mostly backordered now) just to whittle away at the summer B&N list.

I forgot about Lonesome - that pushed Following and Purple Noon over the free shipping threshhold.

Never mind

I don't have any of the Kurosawa ones... I keep picking them up then putting them back for others.

Thanks!
Don't know if I ever pre-ordered or ordered a back-ordered title, but I'm pretty sure each order is shipped complete. Both of my orders today are being packed, cannot be changed, etc. I expect to get two boxes.

This comment is what put me over the top. With a gift card i'd been saving I ordered On the Waterfront, Videodrome and Thin Red Line to get free shipping.

Couldn't resist and bought 3 more to add to the 5 I already ordered earlier today.

Added: Umberto D, Videodrome, and Broadcast News.

I haven't seen it yet, I just ordered it during this sale, but I started with The Seventh Seal and thought it was magnificent.

It's so funny whenever I read about these Criterion flash sales. So many people complaining about having to order 3 titles to get free shipping and here I am in Australia not even able to take advantage of the sale to begin with :P I have to wait until Barnes and Noble's next 50% off sale which will be ages.

Take care folks. I've got some comedy to sort out.

That really happened recently near my city. Some poor girl was texting on her iPhone while walking down the street when she fell into an open manhole. She suffered a leg injury and was bruised up somewhat, but she thankfully lived.

It's fun reading everyone's purchases. Looks as though my constant Melville praise may not have been in vain. I look forward to reading everyone's thoughts in the films.

I am taking a break from Criterions tonight, because I decided to return to where I left off on my Universal Monsters box set. So far tonight, I've watched Frankenstein and The Mummy. I'm now halfway through The Invisible Man now. I had forgotten how amazing Claude Rains is in that film...and that Gloria Stuart is one and the same as the aged Rose Dawson in James Cameron's Titanic.

All the monster movies make me want to revisit Island of Lost Souls, of course.

Am I the only one thinking Mel might have been onto something here?

Funny you should be watching that. I finally got around to start watching mine. Just finished Dracula and will probably do Frankenstein and the Invisible Man tomorrow.

I look forward to finally watching Three Colors when it comes in.

Adding nothing to the conversation, I'm skipping this sale.. Just bought On the Waterfront and Brazil literally last week and now just waiting for some Badlands to come in (jumped on Amazon's price)...
Doing a double feature of The Master and then On The Waterfront tonight...should be a great night.

I guess brilliant minds think alike Jess! I bought Narayama last week and Waterfront just before that. I got both from B & N, as I was able to use coups and save a little bit more over Amazon. I just got my copy of Sansho from Amazon today and those idiots, once again sent it in a bubble pack mailer. It was bad enough when my Hitchcock came with a cracked plastic case...but the Mizo came with dinged corners. After having the last three orders exchanged and leaving one star feedbacks and long feedback complaints about using bubble packs and not using boxes...they still sent Sansho in a bubble pack. This time, I called customer support and leveled a complaint, without shooting the messenger (CSR). They are overnighting a replacement copy...ironically from the same warehouse. It will supposedly be tagged (since my complaint), so we'll see how it is shipped and what condition it comes in.

I may have major OCD, but with certain titles, I go the extra yard to get them in good condition. I even decided to live with a fairly creased/dinged package on The Story of Film DVD set (though the packaging for that set is pretty flimsy).

I had wanted to only order two titles at the most for this flash sale. The Mizo Eclipse set and Ivan's Childhood. It figures that they don't allow back orders with the discount code. I opted to wait until the next sale at either B & N and/or Amazon.

Agreed on Bigger Than Life...unless you've lived with anyone dealing with substance abuse...you can't imagine what it's like...sort of like raising a child with special needs. That is also the reason I bought The Lost Weekend from MoC. Another great film that doesn't get discussed very much.

Thanks for letting me vent! Had a long day at the gastroenterologist with a very upset autistic 10 year old and the wife and I are fried. At least I've got Waterfront, Sansho, and Thief of Bagdad to look forward to over the next weekend!

Yes...the Postwar Kurosawa is a great set and on my list of favorite Eclipse sets as well...along with Nikkatsu Noir and the Silent Ozu/Naruse sets.
