While I've only seen The Gold Rush and Modern Times, I would rank The Great Dictator as my favorite of the three Chaplin Criterions. I'm really excited to see Monsieur Verdoux (even though I have it on my DVR right now). I also have The Circus and Limelight recorded so I'll have to check those out sometime soon.

The speech at the end of the film was brilliantly written, in my opinion. It's too bad that we can't have the ideal world that was spoken about.
Did you watch his short The Rink on the Modern Times blu-ray? I wish they'd put some more shorts on these films as extras. Also, I think there's another short of his on the blu of Au Revoir Les Enfants, which is an amazing movie in it's own right, as it's a short that's shown being watched in the movie.

I was impressed by the transfer. It's my second time watching it since 2011. Karl Malden is awesome as usual. that man is criminally underrated. Brando doesn't do much for me either.
So that confirms it, Criterion is releasing The Tenant.

I suppose you don't like actors that go big when they put on their acting hats. Do you like john Malkovitch?

The film or the actor? And It's really only certain actors I have an issue with. I've just never been impressed by Brando. I like a lot of the films he's in, but not because of him.

Speaking of silent shorts, the Buster Keaton shorts are incredible!

See, I knew who it was and therefore that it was a Godard film but after that....

Looks like my On the Waterfront will arrive today. Hopefully, undamaged.

That is great. You should also check out City Lights. That is my favorite Chaplin movie.

I believe that Criterion should release this movie in your honor...

Of Unknown Origin is actually a pretty solid flick that I could totally see being released as one of the "offbeat" Criterion titles. Peter Weller does battle with one single bothersome rat throughout the course of the movie, and the intrusion of the rat into his home wreaks havoc on his sanity, his professional life, and everything else. It's darkly comical, but also quite competent as a straight-up horror film.

I'll have to take you up on your recommendation to read The Glass Key.

Funny you should mention both in the same post. I ordered the Concorde Cassavetes set last week and a few minutes ago there was a package at the foot of my stairs when I went down to check mail. I was actually momentarily disappointed when I saw the Criterion shipping label.

Absolutely loved it. As others have said, it's hard to add to that without spoilers or even simply coloring how you might see it so I'll just leave it at absolutely loved it.

Everybody should read more Hammett but anybody going into The Glass Key expecting anything beyond the most tenuous connections to Yojimbo is in for a rude awakening. Hell, people going into it exepecting a coherent story are likely to be a bit surprised

It's a damn fun read though.

Hoping that the spotlight gallery of Cassavetes' films on the Criterion main page is a sign that a box set upgrade is right around the corner.

Like I said, it depends on the actor. I just find Brando hard to understand most times, he talks like he has a mouth full of marbles.

And admittedly, I've actually only seen very few of Malkovich's films. I do enjoy The Man in the Iron Mask if I'm extremely bored.

Ze photo is not showing up on my PC, thus I cannot see which film you are referring to. Stuart was only a mouse, and my co-workers were nice enough to help me dispose of him, so my insanity at work is not the result of him. From my co-workers, perhaps, but not Stuart.

Don't just stop with the Glass Key, read The Thin Man, Red Harvest, and The Maltese Falcon. I haven't read the last one yet, according to Good Reads, although I thought I did last year. It's now on my list to read after the following:

The House on Haunted Hill - Shirley Jackson started this one at lunch
The Member of the Wedding - Carson McCullers
The Heart is a Lonely Hunter - Carson McCullers
True Grit - Charles Portis

What I've read in the past week when not busy with SharePoint or Mouse Hunting, if anyone wants something to read:

Charmed Life - Diana Wynne Jones
The Magicians of Caprona - Diana Wynne Jones
Witch Week - Diana Wynne Jones
The Lives of Christopher Chant - Diana Wynne Jones
Conrad's Fate - Diana Wynne Jones
Mixed Magics: Four Tales of Chrestomanci - Diana Wynne Jones (actaully, all of the Jones books were about Chrestomanci)
Anna Dressed in Blood - Kendare Blake
Girl of Nightmares - Kendare Blake
Ferragost - Melina Marchetta (short story)
Molasses - Kristy Egar (short story, would make a good Dardennes film)
Glitches - Marissa Meyer (short story)
The Queen's Army - Marissa Meyer (short story)
Cinder - Marissa Meyer (cyborg Cinderella, whodathunkit)
Scarlet - Marissa Meyer (the sequel, with Red Riding Hood and the big bad wolf is a genetically modified soldier)
The Lottery and Other Short Stories - Shirley Jackson
We Have Always Lived in the Castle - Shirley Jackson

2000 ebooks on the Kobo, and growing. That's not counting my collection of physical books either. I will admit, several on the Kobo are duplicates of my paper books.

Not generally a Brando enthusiast (do avoid "Missouri Breaks" like the plague!) but do find him more and more sympathetic and appealing on each re-viewing of Waterfront.

Speaking of plague, and more to the point, have you considered a strategy for dealing with the eventuality that you might actually be successful in trapping a mouse? Which raises the question of how, exactly, did Stuart actually meet his demise?

I thought Yojimbo was closer to Red Harvest, to be honest.

Also, High and Low was much better than King's Ransom, if we're going to discuss Kurosawa adaptations of Crime novels. I hated all the characters in King's Ransom. Kurosawa made them all far more sympathetic, although he changed quite a bit from the plot.

haha if only all of the Lynch films many of us have imported could yield similar results.

Looks killer, I'm hoping BB carries it in-store so I can cash in some RZ certificates and get it for a few bucks.

Weird, I was just coming back to clarify something in my earlier post. I was thinking of Red Harvest when I made the no coherent story joke.

The Maltese Falcon is a great read, btw. It's practically a shooting script for the Huston film. Virtually all of the dialogue in the film is Hammett. It's pretty remarkable, really.

Stuart was caught in the mouse trap I set last week, this morning. I was getting out of the shower. I heard squealing and clattering, and ran to get dressed and put boots on ASAP. Saw him in the trap in the kitchen, went to work, and had one of my male coworkers come over this morning to dispose of him. These things are magic, just use peanut butter.

I also bought some repellent that's supposed to work well, but obviously, Stuart became accustomed to it. I heard and saw no signs of him for about a week, only to have him come back this morning. I'm leaving it out and resetting the traps, just in case he has friends and family. Like I said, first time in 3 years I've ever had rodents in my apartment, and I was just beginning to feel like he had left on his own.

Still haven't got to Sansho yet, as I'm still cleaning. Moving pantries, refrigerators, stoves, and freezers can be a ball of fun.
