I'm so glad someone posted about it going out of print a while ago, when it was first posted as so on Criterion's website. Although I still paid ~30-35 for it, I think it was well worth it. One of my favorite releases I own.

As an amateur photographer I know that magic hour refers to both. Even the link you provided correctly states that.

I own the German Blu-ray but I'm not very happy with it. They messed up the colors of early dawn (opening scene)...this and the brightness boost kills the atmosphere.

DVD:

Blu-ray:

A great contrast of images. Each one could represent twilight, but only one would evoke the essential feeling for that point in the film.

Here's the quote again:

Wim Wenders:

"This scene here up on the roof, Tom Tom's jump, the one which the movie begins with, we shot it for around a week; every day for 10 minutes, this short period of time...magic hour...there's this twilight between day and night."

Only the DVD screenshot represents twilight (early dawn). We're talking about this very short window of time...it really only lasts for around 10 minutes. These dark blue colors are what it's all about.

I don't see it? Sounds like a sweet deal.

Nah, I would much rather see The American Friend, Lightning Over Water, Alice in the Cities (which is at least semi-confirmed by Hulu), Wrong Move, Kings of the Road, Until The End of the World, and The Goalie's Anxiety At The Penalty Kick all on Criterion before that one.

Okay then. I'm gonna go to Zia Records today to see if they have a copy of Chungking Express and if so, for what price.

I would love it if Criterion were able to release Shotgun Stories on blu-ray.
Jeff Nichols is, in my opinion, one of the best American directors currently working today and he's so new, only being active since 2007.

Take Shelter is one of the best psychological drama's of all time and while Shotgun Stories doesn't match the skill in Take Shelter, it's a debut film so that's forgivable and generally expected, you know?

Still, in saying that, I found it to be a mighty impressive debut film and its got such an authentic American feeling to it. Criterion seems to love releasing debut films and slower, thoughtful films with beautiful cinematography. I'm not sure if anyone would agree with this wish of mine but I would personally love to see it happen.

This movie needs to be on blu-ray and the performance by Michael Shannon is exceptional. Both Shannon and Nichols perfected their craft in Take Shelter but this is a perfect chance to see them both "warming up" I guess.

I enjoyed Take Shelter when I saw it at the theater, but I never had the inclination to watch the movie again or purchase it after that. I heartily recommend it to anyone who has never seen the movie before, because it works wonders during the first viewing.
One of these days, I'll have to revisit this movie.

Thanks for the heads-up about Shotgun Stories. I was not aware of that film.

I totally get that. I bought it because it looks and sounds stunning and for the special features but it isn't a movie I revist often. Probably once every 2-3 months but I find it very satisfying each and every time.

Shotgun Stories has been OOP on DVD in the US and UK for some time now and fetches a price that's far too high. If you want to get it on DVD, I recommend getting it here where it's still in print and quite cheap compared to else where.

http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/dvd/d...stories/413096

However if you feel that way about Take Shelter, you may want to just download it to check it out until it hits blu-ray.
It's got that same rarely re-watchable feeling as Take Shelter.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but does anyone know why Amazon shows a release date of April 23 instead of April 9 for Richard III?

Best Buy, F.Y.E., and Walmart list it as April 23, as well.

Hmm...could Criterion possibly screw up their own release date?

Jeff Nichols is probably my favorite young director working today. I'd be pleased if they gave Shotgun Stories a release. It packs almost just as much of a punch as Take Shelter. I don't think he had the dreaded "sophomore slump" that people like to toss around at every director that has a promising debut. I think his second film is better. It also features one of the greatest performances in years.

He seems like a nice guy, too. I saw a Q&A with him and Michael Shannon last year.

His upcoming film Mud has gotten a lot of buzz as well. Can't wait to see that one.

Right on. Take Shelter was one of the most impressive films of 2011 yet, regrettably I have not seen Shotgun Stories. I'm gonna make it a priority to do so before Mud hits theaters next month.

Totally agree. He's one of the best American directors, period, currently working. Shotgun Stories is excellent and Take Shelter is a masterpiece that I can definitely see growing even further in appreciation over time.

I can't wait to see Mud. It looks terrific. Looks like Nichols managed to bring out the best in Matthew too which is good. I've never been a fan of his but I could always tell there was something in there that was better than he was giving us. He's finally taking acting seriously and getting better at it gradually.

Have you seen Killer Joe? He was excellent in that.

I have never re-watched, but it's funny that it replays in my head so often. I need to listen to the commentary.

Maybe it'a a limited exclusive somewhere, like Quadrophenia was at B&N.

Richard III.... It looks like Criterion has a release date of April 9th, Amazon April 23rd. But Barnes & Noble is listing it at April 2nd!

Still surprised there are no early reviews out there yet.
