I revisited Vanilla Sky on Friday, and my God! Other than a great soundtrack, the film offers nil. Cameron Crowe is at his best when he speaks from the Heart (Say Anything, Almost Famous), but nothing rings true about Vanilla Sky. All he did was undo the psychosexual tension of Abre Los Ojos and Hollywood-ize it. Frankly, Crowe doesn't understand Tom Cruise's pain, he's too square and gentle to step into his shoes. So he's left with a visually flat (spar the ending and the moment he begins his lucid dream), tonally misguided fiasco he would only surpass in inanity with Elizabethtown.

The passing of time is relative to one's age, I suppose. When I was a kid, the idea of sitting through a one-hour church sermon on Sunday morning was torturous, and that hour always seemed never to end. These days, an hour just flies by most of the time.

This sort of thing really punches me in the gut nowadays when I see things like...

It seems like of these were just released yesterday. I watched the James Bond movie, Octopussy, last night, and I outright refuse to believe that the movie is 30 years old. It's not fair.

Glad to see a lot of people getting their OOP titles. I didn't have any interest in them but I'm happy the people that did got them.

I'll be waiting for the announcement. If some your predictions are right, there a few titles I'm interested in.

I lead a marathon training group on Saturday mornings. I made a reference to Raiders of the Lost Ark during one of these training runs a few weeks ago, and the reference went over the heads of many of the others. I was shocked at first to find out that most of the people in my running group had never seen the movie, but I then realized that many of them are 15 years younger than I am.

I went to see Star Wars during its second theatrical run in 1978. My older brother had seen it in 1977 and had spend the entire year talking nonstop about it and collecting the action figures. I was only six years old at the time, but I can remember that experience as clear as day. Sitting in the theater and watching the underbelly of that huge Star Destroyer on the big screen at the beginning of the movie was a moment that I will never forget.

Perhaps. But there was that time where they released 3 Louis Malle films in the same number of months I wouldn't mind at all if they used a similar strategy for Mikio Naruse...
