I like the color still-shots from Last Year at Marienbad that were posted on Criterion's website recently. |

It is sort of nice to see the Taylor Swift photo whenever someone asks about a Barnes & Noble sale.
I stayed up late watching my Blu-rays of The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill. I'll start with the Pierce Brosnan Bond Blu-rays tonight, since I'm going through the whole series in order, and will likely watch all of the Craig Blu-rays this weekend. It's a fun side trip, and I revisit these movies anyway a couple times a year, although not necessarily in order. It's a good thing in this instance, because it keeps me from rushing out to buy a copy of Repo Man. |

I thought of Last Year at Marienbad as a ghost story of sorts the first few times I saw it, because I was thinking along the lines of the Jean-Paul Sartre play, No Exit, about people destined to spend eternity together in Hell without escape from each other's company. At first glance, Last Year at Marienbad does come across as a vision of people going through a maddening repetition of scenarios for all eternity, but I then pondered on the fact that we all go through this same sort of repetition in our own minds all of the time, and that changed the way that I approached the film. (Unfamiliar viewers should not be worried, because the above is not a spoiler for Last Year at Marienbad, This is a spoiler-proof movie.) |

I came up with a few things but the movie the way it's made just does not let you form anything concrete. It was created with that in mind. I suppose you are pointing out a second viewing might bring something you but really it just does hold that much interest for me. I am still young so maybe in 20 years I might come across it again and see it?

I happily watched VHS tapes from the early 1980s to 1999, then happily watched DVDs from 1999 to 2012. Unless there is something amazing that lets me step into a movie and hang out with the Bond girls in person, or something like that, I'll be happy watching Blu-rays for the indefinite future. I'm pretty much collecting favorite movies now with the intent of owning them forever. |

Some people still use VHS and Laserdisc players technologies going back to the 70's and 80's. DVD as now been live more or less for 16 years and it's still going with no clear indication when it might become more like VHS and Laserdisc, something use by an weird group of people ![]() I know that streaming is trying to become the next big thing but it may not really happen in a very strong way for some years to come. I suspect we will have Blu-ray for well into the 2020's with maybe some upgrades something like Ultra Blu-ray or Blu-ray 4K. |

Just to clarify..."2001: A Space Odyssey" was never a novel. What you read was a screenplay. It was released some time after the film had been released in theaters. I saw the film the year it was released and came to my own conclusions about it...as a 10 year old child. ![]() |

Considering your avatar is Blade Runner, you may Love Matienbad. It would be a shame to first experience this most beautiful film in anything less than BluRay quality.

I was born in 1972, and I had a paperback edition of 2001: A Space Odyssey that included some still photos of the film across 20 pages or so in the middle of the book. I read that book several times during childhood. This was before the days of videotapes, cable channels, and such, so I was unable to see the film until I was a teenager. Incidentally, I wonder why movie tie-in novels no longer include middle pages with photos from the movie. It seems as though all of the movie tie-in paperbacks that I owned as a child were published this way. |
