Apparently, it's a "counter-culture" holiday in North America to celebrate the consumption of cannabis. I'm not sure why it's trending now though.

Not sure if this posted the other night.

Sigh. Don't say this, I was so happy to be able to preorder for $27. I've gotten, Piņa, Repo Man, Blimp, Naked Lunch and... Something else but that's a price I can stomach.

$40 for an "Import"? Bleh.

Now the April releases were the last I ordered from, have they stopped doing the reasonable pricing for their releases now? Were May/June releases no longer reasonable?

Blimp is FREAKING EPIC. I blind bought and initially I was not sure about it... As soon as it got to the duel scene, yeah I was IN.

Waterfront is a given, Repo Man is going to take a little to really get into for me, Tin Drum knocked me in the face. Wow. I'm upset that they cut apparently a very interesting documentary about it being heavily censored that was on the original criterion DVD.

A man escaped? That's like asking if the sky is blue

Man I love your list. I would probably own the others if only they had commentary or better extras, I don't know why but unless there's something substantial to go back to, I can't really justify the high price purchase.

With issues surrounding the stupid huge increase to postal prices shipping to Canada, I half wonder it Amazon/B&N and such are going to be my only choices.

Sigh. This sucks.

On a good note, I think I found AoS for $40 shipped. Here's hoping the seller follows through!

Commemorating the day has been in the planning stages for years but its supporters don't tend to remember that until the 24th or 25th.

Of May.

Just off the top of my head I would say take a look at Carlos and 12 Angry Men. They're both outstanding and they seem like they'd be a good fit for you.

well everyone will recommend movies he liked the most. if he wants to get them all anyway i would just go for the less expensiv releases

for Sansho the Bailiff i would recommend the eureka release, since it has a second movie that the criterion release does not have.

ive just watched the original Harakiri (the eureka release) for the first time. awesome picture quality. and i liked the movie alot. but the remake was slightly better. somehow i liked the actors more.

I notice that your profile states that your location is Vancouverish.

Are you close enough to make a drive into Washington?

My copy of Le Cercle Rouge came the same way from Importcds, and another user had the same thing happen from Deep Discount.

If you're writing about the documentary that I've seen on the old Criterion DVD: In that documentary the director states that he made the cuts and offered very good reasons for doing so, like remaining faithful to the novel. So, the old DVD, which is closer to the theatrical release, is the Director's cut. Criterion calls the new cut a "complete cut."

There is another documentary on the old DVD about how somewhere (Oklahoma?), there was a trial over child pornography (it was decided that the film wasn't pornographic). The quesionable scene was in the theatrical release.

I don't think people should be pleased to lose the original director's/theatrical cut with Criterion's "upgrade." If the old DVD was "upgraded" with the same cut Criterion put on Blu-ray, then the old DVD is out-of-print, unfortunately.

Add: You can get both cuts, director's/theatrical and "complete," on a UK Blu-ray.

This scene from the movie cracks me up hard. Mila Jovovich's reaction to the lighter is classic. Happy 4/20 Day to all the tokers of the world.

OT-It's also about legalization and there appears to be growing support for this (2 states recently "legalized" recreational consumption when medical use was controversial before). I would kind of assume that (right or wrong) the proponents have seen the reversal of public opinion on gay marriage as some sort of harbinger of things to come. It's probably getting more press this time around because we just had a brutal week of nasty/scary news and a lot of folks need something to laugh about (Snoop Dog, etc.)

Back to Criterion.

read some pages back. On post 69267 I posted about what another user got from importcds. It's not a bootleg, but what I posted.

I didn't even think about the booklet but it is probably missing. A Criterion is worthless without that even if the disc is intact and so I will return my copy. This title seems to be the most hard-to-find out of the recent OOP batch and so I am not sure I will ever get a replacement copy
