Hopefully it will get me to buy more Criterion releases as I have been wanting to get some for awhile now . A lot of the titles sound really interesting but I am not a fan of the price.

I'm watching my Blu-rays of John Carpenter's The Thing and the 2011 prequel to The Thing tonight. I'm almost at the blood test scene in the Carpenter version. I've always loved this movie.

John Carpenter discusses his version on one of the extras for the Criterion edition of David Cronenberg's Videodrome. That panel discussion with Carpenter, Cronenberg, and John Landis is ace. We need a Criterion of Landis's An American Werewolf in London.

The Thing is my all time favorite horror movie. Ennio Morricone composed the film score, one of his minimalist masterpieces.

Great Owl, I highly recommend the commentary. It is one (if not the best) of the great commentaries I have heard. Carpenter and Russell are just fantastic. There is a scene were Kurt Russell almost died which they go in detail. Kurt Russel's comment about that scene is priceless.

I wish Criterion would release the original The Thing From Another World. The WB DVD release was ok pq-wise but just having a battered re-release trailer as an extra was sad. For a film with it's pedigree, it deserves better.

I did not know that the 2011 version of The Thing was a prequel. It gives me more of an incentive to check it out.

I watched my copy of The Thing last week and I loved it. It was a really fun film and there were parts where I actually jumped. I can't remember the last time that something didn't feel predictable. Also, I just picked up An American Werewolf In London today as part of the Upgrade and Save.

Also, I was looking for Miami Vice today at Best Buy, but it doesn't seem to be available anymore. All the discussion in prior weeks sparked my interest lol. I even went to BJs and nothing.

The DVD of Howard Hawks's original is a terrible transfer. I agree that it deserves better.

I consider both Carpenter's The Thing and Cronenberg's The Fly superior remakes of the original. 1980s remakes of some 50s and 60s films were actually pretty good, if not great. Unfortunately, I have not seen any great 2000s remakes of 80s films.

I've watched the commentary track several times over via the old DVD that I used to own. Carpenter's The Thing is another movie that I've owned on VHS, DVD, and now Blu-ray. I wish that the full Terror Takes Shape documentary were included on the Blu-ray, instead of in its abbreviated track version here.

I own The Thing From Another World on DVD, and would love to upgrade it to Blu-ray at some point. That Howard Hawks film is an old favorite as well.

I'm a defender of the 2011 prequel, although I don't consider it in the same league as the other two films. It's heart is in the right place, and it's a respectful homage to the legacy of the Carpenter film.

Yeah, I agree with this. It might be the low expectation I went in with, but I found it to be an enjoyable film.

Very cool. Our little guy definitely makes for an exciting time. I still get to watch a lot of movies, but I largely stick to shorter movies, either because I am tired or because I have a brief time during a nap.

Nice! I understand that Akira Takarada is going to have a cameo in the upcoming Godzilla remake, and that the movie is going to be quite serious in tone, like the original.

That makes me even more excited. Also I am now debating getting Suspiria signed by Kier or getting The Frighteners signed by Jeffrey Combs.

I agree with your comment about 2011 prequel. I like the fact that it is truly a prequel and not a remake. It actually adds substance to the 1980s film.

It is still probably best to watch Carpenter's The Thing first. The prequel would take away a lot of the magic of 1980s The Thing, if viewed first.

NBA playoffs started last weekend. He could be busy for a while if the Knicks keep playing well.

I would love to see this get a release, and think it would fit very well in the collection.

After seeing Spring Breakers, I think that would be a great Criterion title. Not even kidding!

Just finished Repo Man. WTF was that ending. Nuts. I really thought everything up to that point was well put together though. Need to give it some more time for reflection.

Also the credits going backwards is a little disarming.
