I haven't seen his other films (I've known of their existence for quite some time), but My Lord!, the interviews I've seen of him make him look even less interesting.

That said, at some point in the future, I will see Gummo and maybe Julien Donkey Boy, but I'm not expecting too much.
I can see that, but if you get a chance I would highly recommend Gummo and from what you've written I think you might like that more. If you don't like that one then I'd just figure you wouldn't like his others. It's funny I think this is only like the 2nd movie I've disagreed with you about!

It's been a while since I watched it, but I remember really enjoying them. The only negative is the documentary is missing a lot of the scenes from his other films because they couldn't clear some rights. The effect is that at times it gets a little dry because there is nothing to break up the talking heads. Also it gets frustrating that they refer to things that you cannot then view.

Totally agreed. Spring Breakers is a Millennial Movie through and through, and I'd add sexual commodification to the bolded points above. It's one of the better films I've seen on the young year--and it looks like a great companion to the upcoming The Bling Ring, which appears to trade on the same themes whilst upping the omg celeb-obsessed factor.

As to Korine's other films I haven't seen them, and from what I've read they could confirm some sort of prankster accusations; but Spring Breakers, in my estimation, does not succumb to this.

I do largely agree with that accusation re: Lars von Trier, though.
You should definitely watch his others. I've enjoyed them all and I am also looking forward to the bling ring!

I will eventually give Gummo a chance. I think it made Matt Zoller Seits' top ten of that year.

What was the other one? A Malick film? Side Effects?

That's so wrong that it's come full circle and it's right again. I laughed, though.

I finished watching Straw Dogs and am now watching Poltergeist. I'm 41 years old, but the clown doll still freaks me out. The picture quality on the Poltergeist Blu-ray is phenomenal so far, though.

Amen!!! I'm reminded of my recent experience of picking up Marienbad and it arriving in less than ideal condition. Excuse my ignorance, but I always get confused between digipaks and digibooks ... I'm thinking Marienbad is considered a digipak???

FWIW, I recently bought the BBS Story set online through Best Buy. Thankfully, it arrived in excellent shape.

I'm not really a fan of The Tree of Life. I don't blame anyone else for liking it and I can honestly say that I understand the movie, it just isn't my thing. That movie is the reason why I was iffy on watching To the Wonder, but so far it looks like I only dislike Tree of Life of all his movies I've seen. Side Effects is fine, I just think it's overrated.

On a very quick note I totally agree with you on Oblivion. It was just blatantly taking everything. I actually started to laugh at the
[Show spoiler]Clone fight scene
it was so derived and clichéd. In the end I think it was meant to be a good hearted homage, but it's almost as though he would like it to be thought of as his own. Cinematography was great though.

Sophia Coppola is great. I still have a couple of hers to go, but I really love The Virgin Suicides and The Bling Ring looks very interesting. I like movies about our generation, their funny and sad at the same time and Sophia Coppola is a great director to tackle the subject.

I really, really, REALLY enjoyed The Virgin Suicides.

I hope we see a Blu-ray release in the States sooner than later.

I would do unspeakable things to see her films in the collection.

Yeah, I've been waiting for a announcement for a long time. Funny, I thought I was the only one who was still waiting for it!

How do I join the "Criterion a week" group and will we be discussing the films in the group or the thread that was started?

Just purchased a copy of Army of Shadows on blu-ray at Amazon via a third party seller. The price seemed too good to be true for a new copy but the seller had a high rating.

It's been some time now since I got a new Criterion and frankly I've just been falling behind in my collecting of them.

Last night I bought David Lean Directs Noel Coward, Naked Lunch, Badlands, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp & The Blob. Really excited to check them all out.

If anybody else got an e-mail for a B&N 20% coupon that won't be using it this week, it will allow me to get both John Malkovich and Wings of Desire blu's instead of having to pick one!

They're both 30% off, so plus the coupon and membership I'll get them for around $22 after tax each.

Only two in the sale that I don't currently already own:

Others there fyi:
Seventh Seal
Fanny & Alexander
Red Shoes
Thin Red Line
Days of Heaven
Traffic
