Speaking of Stalag 17 I listened to The Apartment commentary a few days ago (great track BTW). Apparently Wilder distanced himself from Stalag 17 after the studio interfered and made him go a bit easy with how the Nazis were depicted. The studio wanted the movie accessible to the newly open German market. It's still a great movie that I would love to own, just thought that factoid was interesting.

Nah, I'm pretty sure that Roman Holiday and Stalag 17 will be released by WB/Paramount fairly soon.

Strong possibilities for CC release:

Guilda
Sony's Frank Capra titles
Ace In the Hole, The Lady Eve, Sullivan's Travels upgrades (d'oh! )
In A Lonely Place
The Lady from Shanghai
Seconds
Born Yesterday
The Miracle of Morgan's Creek
The Uninvited
This Gun for Hire
MGM/UA titles : They Shoot Horses, Don't They, Witness for the Prosecution, Inherit the Wind, Judgment at Nuremberg, Birdman of Alcatraz, One, Two, Three, The Train

etc.

Watched Rear Window earlier. Talk about a movie.

Too bad they don't make them like they used to.

Probably my favorite Hitchcock, although it's really a toss-up with NORTH BY NORTHWEST and most of his others are pretty close.

It's between Rear Window and Vertigo for me. Love myself some James Stewart.

The first scene with Grace Kelly in close-up is one of my favorite character introduction scenes of all time.

North by Northwest is my favorite Hitchcock film, though, and this was joyously confirmed a few days ago, when I saw the movie on Blu-ray for the first time.

The Criterion Collection is very well represented in mine too. I'd say about half of my top 15-ish would be from Criterion.

I really enjoyed the scene when she had a horrified expression on her face. It was fantastic and one of the best, in my opinion.

I'm almost done watching The Trouble With Harry and I love it. Probably my second favorite thus far from The Masterpiece Collection that I've seen. For a 1955 film, it is beautiful.

Time for a truly scatter brained post.

I hope we get an upgrade of Hiroshima, Mon Amour with tomorrow's announcement. Aside from George Washington, it is my most wanted, and with the recent Cannes news, it should definitely be coming soon, I would hope.

I watched Carlos a couple weeks ago, but I still can't get it out of my head. Assayas' use of music is perfect. The scene where he uses The Feelies is one of my favorite cinematic moments in recent memory. Seeing that his newest film is getting released by IFC, I hope Criterion goes 3 for 3 in releasing his latest output.

When do you guys think Frances Ha will be announced? I'm not sure Criterion's reputation with releasing stuff right after its theatrical release, sort of like the general release of the film. I know they did Benjamin Button, any other examples?

Anyone have an updated list of what we're still waiting on from the New Year's illustration?

Upgrades:

All That Heaven Allows (probably alongside Written on the Wind)
Autumn Sonata
Le samourai

New Spines:

La cage aux folles
Eraserhead
The Kid (Chaplin)
Leon, the Professional
Scanners (Janus also has The Brood)

Polanski's The Tenant is also a possibility, if the building itself is a clue.

Other Newsletter Clues:

Bitter Rice (2012)
Frances Ha
Grey Gardens upgrade
I Married a Witch
Y Tu Mama Tambien (2011 and 2012)

All thanks to the wonders of VistaVision, "Motion Picture High Fidelity!" THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY is great fun and the crisp fall colors are really gorgeous on the Blu-ray.

Guys I need help. I have 80 dollars worth of credit on Amazon. Are there any Criterion titles that are essential for owning? Also, how about upcoming titles? There are just so much to choose from I'd love some recommendations.

I'm pretty sure it was for Chaplin's "The Kid". People seem to mistake it for Leon, The Professional.

I wish it was the professional. Maybe the first film that I have ever loved.
