I finished Vertigo just now and I'm completely won over. I never knew what was going to happen.

I think I would put it a close second behind Rear Window, from what I've seen so far. That Kim Novak is quite a woman.

Satyajit Ray's films don't strike me as Bollywood, if anything an Indian response to Italian neo-realism, at least the Ray films I've seen anyway.

They were part of the Parallel Cinema movement that was quite far apart from Bollywood.

I thought all Indian cinema was called Bollywood, not just the singy-dancy big-budget stuff you might usually associate with the term. Wikipedia says it's specifically Hindi cinema, so I guess Ray doesn't count, but it's an understandable mistake.

Anyhow, I recognize that Ray is one of the most revered directors in world cinema, so fair play to them releasing his films, I'm personally not excited for them though. I mean, I've only seen Pather Panchali, but I kind of hated it I'm sad to say. So I sort of expect not to get on too well with any of his films, but I wonder?

The Kurosawa Eclipse sets are good, they look good for films on DVD that haven't been restored or really cleaned up. But assuming the UK sets look the same... the almost strict refusal not to include special features on Eclipse sets means that, for example, on Sanshiro Sugata, there are two scenes described in intertitles as lost, but that have apparently been found and included as special features on other sets, but are nowhere to be found on the Criterion disc. So I can't judge the UK releases myself but I'd say... they're cheaper too, aren't they, you might as well go that route.

Who said I actually bashed something ? I can use English correctly thank you very much...however typing is another story. I don't see anywhere in my comments where I actually bashed an Indian film. I will say the Indian Superman film did suck. Not that any of this is really all that important...I just feel there are better films out there, and much more highly requested films to release.
Your turn now, you get a 2 minute rebuttal

Have you actually seen the Ray films in question? If not, then you can't authoritatively say there are better films out there.

It appears everyone is acting like they are on their period right now because the Criterion announcements are running a little late......

I'm used to it... these announcements are always this late. I've seen them list new titles before after 7pm CST. At least they are announcing them today.

Hoping for Life Aquatic in this batch. (esp before Summer ends)

You can, but then people will automatically judge you as another one of the countless forgettable posters who enter this thread every month hoping for a release of [insert mainstream popular film that will inevitably be released eventually] and acting dismissive of most of the rest of Criterion's catalog. Aka, you bring nothing to the conversation, and are an annoyance.

How?

It's really only amusing because you seem to express authority over something you have no clue about.

Nothing I'm familiar with. Little disappointed but maybe I'll find a gem.

I was way off with my predictions.

Not seeing anything that catches my interest though.

Really solid lineup: Satajit Ray (I haven't seen either), Frankenheimer's Seconds, Lubitsch's To be or Not to be and first and foremost: Max Ophuls' Earrings of Madame De.

Can't wait for La Ronde now!

First great month in a while, IMO. 2 Ray gems, Lubitsch, Seconds is a masterpiece, and more Ophuls.

Edit: Seconds is listed as 1.75:1... wonder if that's a mispint, since the film was always 1.85.1 (and 1.75 isn't a "real" aspect ratio - 16x9 is 1.78)
