movies like chunkign express i got from the UK for only around 8-9€ and the OOP release is around what? 40-50-100€? ^^

and i compared the reviews of "in the realm of the senses".. UK and criteron release are nearly the same quality. but the UK release is less then half the price to import.

and some masters of cinema releases are even better compared to the criterion release (sansho the baliff, harakiri) or like the same quality.. gate of hell..

sure criterion is a awesome label and the criterion bug has infected me too but spending sometimes way more money only for the criterion label on the disk and maybe the nicer cover art?
Feel the same way (MoC REPO MAN Steelbook is a great release on par with the Criterion release, and there is the fact I'm in Australia where Region B reigns. I do have a Region-Free BR Player but it's on it's last legs.

I couldn't hold out on the Amazon Sale, so I got the following

THE BLOB
NAKED LUNCH
ON THE WATERFRONT
BADLANDS
BAND OF OUTSIDERS
PIERRE ETAIX
A MAN ESCAPED
THE MAN WHO KNEW TO MUCH

MARKETA LAZAROVA & SHOAH are definite buys for me if the Barns & Noble sale comes round in July.

There is something I came across that those who have addresses outside the US might find of interest -

When I went to the Amazon website during the current Criterion sale to purchase ON THE WATERFRONT I was given the message that they could not deliver to my address in Australia. What a letdown, I was really looking forward to that bluray! Now, later on by chance I was on the Blu-ray.com site and by following its link to Amazon ON THE WATERFRONT bluray I didn't get that message saying they can't deliver to my address.

be nice

If your into Chaplin, Keaton, Tati, etc. consider getting the Pierre Etaix set. I saw the three shorts last night and I had a blast. Very funny and charming

Thanks the suggestion! ++Should have gotten that instead of The Phantom Carriage, but now my blu-ray budget is blown and I'll have to wait for the next sale.

So I've never seen The Killing or The Night of the Hunter. Both look very interesting to me. But they would both be blind buys. I can watch them for free on Amazon Prime. Any opinions if I should do this first, see if I like them, and then buy them? Or just go ahead and blind buy them? I have no idea when the sale will end, so if I watch them first I'm afraid Amazon may end the sale. Thoughts?

One of the 12 minute shorts, Rupture, is available on YouTube, you should check it out to see if its your kind of thing...

I, too, have considered blind buying The Killing, so I can't comment. NOTH is outstanding. The film's cinematography is some of the best I've ever seen in cinema history. Robert Mitchum is incredible as the villain. Don't expect a scary movie per say. It has a lot of dark humor but it makes for a great story. The features are amazing and it's one of the best Criterions I own. The only bad thing is the packaging. It's in a cardboard digibook style package, and chances are it will arrived some what banged up unless you buy it in stores. This seems to be the case for a lot of folks who bought theirs and had it shipped.

Both are essential Criterions. Both are 2K remasters from the camera negatives, The Killing has Killer's Kiss in HD as an extra (Kubrick's previous feature) and Hunter has the incredible "Charles Laughton Directs" documentary.

They're worth owning. Both films have high replay value and they're fantastic works. Two of my favorites.

^^ Thank you UNCMT9, Egbert Souse, & iScottie. I really appreciate your thoughts.

I've already picked up 12 Angry Men, Anatomy of a Murder, Badlands, The Game and Rosemary's Baby. In addition to The Killing and Night of the Hunter, I'm also considering Paths of Glory, On the Waterfront, and Repo Man. Plus I want to get the Band of Brothers/The Pacific 2fer that Amazon has on sale right now. That's a lot of $$.

mmmmm, Father's Day is coming up. Guess the wife and kids can get me a present

Ooooh, forgot The Thin Red Line.

This.

I've never seen The Killing, but The Night of the Hunter is one of my all-time favorites. It's a glorious Criterion package.

I did have to visit a couple of stores before I found a digipak that was not jacked up, though.

I'll have to take my chances with Amazon. No Best Buy store near me has it.

You're lucky! My closest B&N doesn't carry films.

anyone else having bad luck with digipacks? Original copy of Repo Man and the replacement Amazon sent me look like crap, might just keep the better looking one instead of seeking yet another replacement

On the bright side, The Phantom Carriage is fantastic.

I'll check it out one of these days. I find that Stanley Kubrick is a mixed bag of tricks, but this particular movie looks more appealing, considering my general tastes.

Again, I suggest renting it. It is largely an unpretentious noir, albeit with not much of the visual flair in his later works. So, for me it doesn't have the rewatchability of Barry Lyndon, Dr. Strangelove, 2001 or even Eyes wide Shut.

It's still a great value for the package contains Killers Kiss.

Success!

Amazon is shipping out my Last Year at Marienbad that I ordered right before it went OOP.

Now hopefully they can get the Le Cercle Rouge out as well....
