Also, yes, sometimes titles go out of print because they are planning a reissue; I think this is the case with Playtime right now.

As a caveat, if you're into blind buying, and you see a title that you were on the fence about checking out, and it's just gone OOP, and there are few other viewing options, it would probably be worth it to pick it up before it skyrockets.
Thank you for the advice. Of the 25 Criterion's I've purchased so far they have all been blind buys and I was trying to collect them all, not really for a particular reason other then love for movies.

Is there a way to tell when a title is going to go OOP? I just signed up at Criterion.com last night and signed up for their news letter as well. Do they email members when they have a new batch going OOP?

Sorry if these are obvious questions, I'm really new to Criterion.

Default July 8th and 9th

The current Barnes and Noble "buy two, get one free" sale officially ends July 8th. Traditionally, the annual Barnes and Noble 50% off Criterion collection sale starts the next day, however I have not officially heard this announcement.

What this means, if indeed these sales do end/begin on these dates, there will be a three hour window of time to take advantage of both sales. Here's how it is able to happen: (1) the Barnes and Noble "buy two, get one free" sale extends to 3 AM to accommodate buyers in the Pacific Standard Time and (2) the Barnes and Noble 50% off Criterion collection sale starts at 12 midnight Eastern Standard Time.

Blu-rays that normally retail for $39.99 each can be had for an average of $13.33 each during that three hour window.

I will definitely try that! Thanks for the tip!

Not sure about that, perhaps someone with more experience can chime in. I know they used to post announcements on their website, but I don't know if they still do that.

If I'm reading correctly, there are currently 9 OOP Criterion blu-ray's, of which I own 3. With the current sale, today I could buy one OOP or 4 available titles. With titles like the man who fell to earth and the third man, it would be more like 18 sale titles or those 2. So I guess my questions are:

1) Start buying OOP's right away for fear of them skyrocketing in price or stick to sale titles?

2) Do OOP's ever come back in print?

3) How quickly or often I should say do titles go OOP and with having limited income, is it possible to keep up?

Any feedback from Criterion collectors that have been doing this for a while would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Maybe, instead, pick up the current OOP titles that are getting more scarce?

Leon Morin, Priest can be had on Amazon for $18.99 right now.
Le Cercle Rouge
Le Doulos (DVD)
Last Year at Marienbad

The rights to these titles were procured by another company, so it's all but sure that we won't be getting re-releases of these.

I like to collect (hoard) movies too, but I can't even imagine trying to collect all of Criterion's titles, especially after giving them a 5 year head start, and their 3-5 releases a month

I'd definitely watch a movie like The Third Man before deciding if spending an extra $200 is worth getting a Criterion versus "settling" for the Studio Canal version

Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen's This is the End features a fairly funny parody of the notorious rape scene in Rosemary's Baby.

I happen to have all of the Blu-rays currently released minus the ones from this month, and I can't imagine trying to collect them all starting right now. So many you'd have to pick up, and it's hard enough to keep up with their monthly releases. Even when I stop buying 2 months or so before I know a sale is coming up, 'catching back up' is very difficult financially.

I bought 18 during the last Amazon sale, and if B&N has another sale, I likely won't have anything to buy, because I'll slowly pick up this months releases so I don't fall too far behind.

Unless you're planning on selling an organ, catching up this late in the game is gonna be TOUGH.... it's not like these titles pop up at used shops for $5

I have roughly $300 a month I can spend on them so it would be possible it would just take some time. I've purchased 22 on this current sale so far. The big question I have is should I go for the remaining 6 OOP's or keep buying the sale ones? Anyone know how long the sale will go on and are these sales rare?

The remaining 6 I need are:

The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Third Man
Chungking Express
Pierrot le Fou
Le Cercle Rouge
Last Year at Marienbad

I was thinking about getting the sub $80 ones first but don't know if its worth sacrificing actual sale items now available.

I always wondered how does a film get selected for the criterion collection
And I was wondering can a film like night of the living dead(1968) join this collection
Cause I've been wanting to buy this film for a while(big Romero fan)

It can if they want to...and I think that would be a great choice.

Their site can get creaky under heavy loads so save yourself a potential headache and create your online account ahead of time.

the perfect storm.

or, as an acquaintance from my college days once said, "a power rotation" . . . a group of people sitting in a dorm room in a circle, with two j's passed around in opposite directions, one person gets both at the same time

I saw a while ago that some Blu-Ray players will play a select bunch of criterion movies with the "Stop, Top Menu" trick, does anyone have a near enough complete list of what works and what doesn't? Any list would be appreciated
