2013 for Criterion has been amazing, and completely out does their 2012. And they still have a whole quarter left to announce! And since we have a good idea of what might be coming (Eraserhead, I Married a Witch, Scanners, The Kid), it's safe to say this could be one of the greatest years Criterion's had for a very long time.

More money saved for me again - with all the Shout / Scream Factory titles that I am getting, maybe it's better off this way - but do have some interest in the Bergman set...

Very interesting line-up.

The Spy Who Came In from the Cold is the only one I've seen, and it's a great film. Will buy for sure.

The 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman is the most exciting of the announcements - I was this close to pre-ordering Stromboli from the UK, I am also glad of the delay.

La Cage Aux Folles looks fun, I think I will pick it up.

Not sure if I need Slacker... That might be a try before I buy, unless my wife has seen it and wants it.

Autumn Sonata is the only one I am pretty sure I won't buy (though I will read up on it before I make my final decision).

It's the only collaboration of the two Bergmans of Sweden: Ingmar and Ingrid. Ingrid plays a domineering mother in one of her best roles. If you like the other Bergman films from the Rossellini set you have to get Autumn Sonata as well.

For those unfamiliar with the films, here's a little snippet from the critics:

Slacker – 3 stars (out of 4) – “a movie with an appeal almost impossible to describe . . . we don’t get a story, but we do get a feeling.” – Roger Ebert

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold – 4.5 stars (out of 5) – “a tremendously influential and powerful entry in the espionage genre . . . it's cynical and romantic, but in both cases, also realist.” – Jaime S. Rich

Autumn Sonata – No. 5 on Roger Ebert’s Top Ten List for 1978. “As a tour de force of screen acting, Autumn Sonata stands unchallenged as the finest work of Ingmar Bergman’s last few years as a movie director.” – Peter Cowie

La Cage aux Folles – 3.5 stars (out of 4) – “…slapstick, farce, wicked social satire, lachrymose soap opera, and, sneaking in here and there, even a few plausible human truths.” – Roger Ebert

3 Films by Roberto Rossellini starring Ingrid Bergman – not so much easily available from the top critics, but generally very positive reviews.

It's not that I think it'll be a bad movie, it's that I think it will have very little re-play value for me. Not much point buying it if I won't want to watch it.

With ever title that comes back from the LD days, in this case La Cage aux Folles, I keep hoping that Criterion will get back some of other titles that have been missing like...

Robocop
Silence of the Lambs
This is Spinal Tap (It is missing one of the commentaries from the Crit DVD.)
Spartacus (New friggin' transfer)
...and as silly as it is, Armageddon (Although, I don't know if Disney will ever let them release it on Blu-ray or a finished version of the alternate cut even exist, outside of the SD edited, non-anamorphic version from the original DVD/LD release.)

I could dream about Hard Boiled and The Killer, but those aren't happening.

They've already been offered and turned down Silence Of the Lambs.
Apparently they felt they wouldn't be able to add anything that the current blu doesn't have already.

Another month where I am unsurprisingly unfamiliar with everything, but I could be in for picking up all the September releases. Slacker and Autumn Sonata are obvious choices, as I'm already a huge Bergman fan and I've liked all the Linklater films I've seen. La Cage aux Folles just sounds fantastic, I find Criterion always does a prime job of picking comedies. Rossellini boxset also sounds great, but that one will probably get put off until a 40-50% off sale. The Spy Who Came In From The Cold is the only one I'm on the fence about, but luckily my library has a copy!

It's also a great 'portrait-of-a-city' film. The editing and *especially* the cinematography is phenomenal.
I was probably a bit harsh on Fallen Angels. More than anything, the characters just annoyed me. I do like some of the material with Kaneshiro and his father. The movie looks fantastic but I just couldn't get into it.

As for Criterion's September announcement, The Spy Who Came in From the Cold is a pleasant surprise. I'm a big Richard Burton and John le Carre fan so it's a must buy. Been waiting forever for the Blu-ray! Will likely also pick up Autumn Sonata. I've never seen La Cage aux Folles though I'm familiar with the remake.

I really like this film, Mifune. And just this past week was discussing it with a good friend of mine -- he is also a very big collector -- and thinking how great it would be if we could get it in the Criterion collection.

I've had a very difficult time getting even a good DVD release. Even the old French disc was unimpressive. Anyhow, I have a short list of favorite Italian films that I've been hoping will eventually come to Blu-ray and this announcement was a terrific surprise. Here's my poster list (I think the list is from 2009).

But, I've taken a note and will manage the excitement better next time.

I was actually wondering about when we would get another Bergman upgrade last night. I wasn't expecting it so soon, what with Wild Strawberries just coming out last week, but I'm not complaining in the slightest. Hope this means we might see another Godard this year too.
