That's a really odd comparison lol. The two animation styles are actually completely different. Animatrix itself has several different animation styles included. Check out Waking Life first as Abdrewes says.

Are the two I can reccomend fully, the rest I am either mixed on (Scanner Darkly, Slacker, etc) or am cautious to reccomend (two very nice films he made with Jack Black, Bernie and School of Rock).

I've never seen another movie like Slacker before. It truly is a great example for sociology students. I think more films like that need to be made because sometimes nothing is more interesting than hearing people talk.

I've never seen the animated Linklater films.

Linklater's catalogue is a mixed bag for me. The films range from outstanding (Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise) to decidedly not outstanding (The Newton Boys).

I wouldn't mind seeing a Blu-ray release of SubUrbia.

Yes! Suburbia would be amazing if it was available at all. It's not even available on DVD! Yes, it never was released on DVD ever! And I will not buy the VHS version because, well, my old vcr is all dusty and under a pile of boxes.

Has anyone seen Before Midnight yet? I plan on seeing it in my local arthouse theater this week.

Haha, I didn't like Bernie either.

Although part of that has to do with the fact that the real-life counterpart was a not-so-nice guy that regularly conned these women and was made into someone more sympathetic in this film.

the extras on the ros/berg box set look amazing can't wait for the Laura Mulvey commentary, she's one of my fav critics. it's going to take a week to go through all of these extra features, and they make the box set so much more than a collection of three movies.

If anyone has an hour to spare, I highly recommend today's free Hulu title, Gosho's Burden of Life. It is touching, yet funny, tale of an aging couple and the relationship between a father and his young son. In general, these 101 Days of Summer titles have been pretty great.

As far as sci fi, the best of the genre (Solaris, 2001, Blade Runner, Strange Days & AI) provides a chance to look beyond into political, sociological and spiritual issues.

Well, it's a chance to look at Wells' political, sociological and spiritual issues...
He'd written the screenplay before adapting it into the book, so he pretty well has carte blanche to get on his own 30's socialist-pamphlet soapbox about how prewar Britain SHOULD be run after the war, to enlighten the masses, in the wake of 30's-Blitz fears.
(They only hinted at Wells' socialist-activist leanings in Time After Time, now get a taste of the real thing uncut.)

Now the point I was making before listing all those moves is that when you are watching The Leopard, Beauty and the Beast, The Naked Lunch et al you are already watching gay cinema. These works are uniquely formed from a gay perspective and without gays you wouldn't have them. You are all watching and enjoying gay movies.

Okay, up to now, I've let Lutz' "Doesn't anybody wanna talk about La Cage some more?" thread-steering go, but have to admit, I'm morbidly curious about this one, lest it keep me up all night wondering.

Are you referring to Cocteau (which is possible for the director, but nothing of it shows in the finished film), or Disney (in which case you might be confusing it with The Lion King...Or are you suggesting that Gaston is overcompensating, which might also be likely? )
