Jubal
Weekend

My Barnes & Noble order arrived in the mail today.

Things To Come
Wild Strawberries
3:10 To Yuma

I also got an email from Amazon saying that my Blu-rays of Diabolique and Stagecoach had shipped. Woo hoo!

Some solid good prices on Amazon right now! I should have waited to order Diabolique and Stagecoach today, although it's only a few dollars difference.

Incidentally, and off topic, I finally made my way to a theater again, only for the third time this year.

World War Z is not a great flick, but it's pretty darn good. Intense, exciting, and fast-paced. I like how the movie is more concerned with mass epidemic damage control dynamics than it is with the same old tired flesh-eating zombie storyline. Thumbs up.

You might like that Elia Kazan movie about a plague outbreak in New Orleans.

edit: It's Panic In the Streets

Trilogy of Life blu boxset was 18 bucks brand new on Amazon earlier. Absolutely insane! I missed it by a few minutes as I got an error when I added to cart. I was able to get:

Heaven's Gate for 15 bucks!
Col Blimp for 17!

note: There are still some really cheap CC blus on Amazon right now (Heaven's Gate, Hollis Frampton, A Night to Remember, more)

And when you're done with Keystone, you can move on to Chaplin's Essanay and Mutual films, where he really begins to shine. None on Blu-Ray so far.

By the way, I hope you're not disappointed when you realize that Monsieur Verdoux is not a silent film.
Excellent. If my interest in that set rises I'll just grab the BFI release
I already know it isn't a silent film so that won't come as any suprise to me.

Of course, I try to order some of these cheap criterion titles and they won't ship outside the US. What a bummer

I saw Leon Morin, Priest last night and I'm wishing I hadn't jumped on to this on account of being a going OOP title. I found it a very unsatisfying film - the theological discussions were not hugely interesting, the undercurrent of passion was not sufficiently exploited to make me really feel for the characters, the backdrop of the Axis occupation seemed just that - a backdrop. The film runs rather long and IMO coasts mainly on the charisma of the lead pair (which admittedly is considerable, although I would have liked to see a little more dimension from Belmondo's character). Also, while I'm sure this was not an agenda, the successful conversion of the woman and her daughter to a Christian way of life is a little unsettling to my atheistic thinking (it could be just me, and I'm not a deep thinking fellow).

Thumbs up

I just finished watch Le Samourai what a great great crime thriller. Now put me on the list for those who want it on blu ray. I was curious to watch this with all the other users high praises for this film and since I enjoyed Le Circle Rouge , why not try this one...And what a great atmospheric , creepy thriller this was !
