Not Criterion-related (I don't think), but maybe someone could identify this movie for me:

It was a black and white science fiction film from the 50's or 60's. All I remember about it was that it seemed to be about a man living by himself on another planet.

I saw this years ago and have never been able to figure out what it is. Any ideas?

I've seen all but 7 of the titles (and the last two you bolded). But yeah, those are solid choices. Marketa is the blind buy I am most looking forward to

Great choices! (yet no love for Shoah?)

I hope Devils Backbone will be included in the sale

The subject matter of Shoah doesn't interest me at all, so I'm really not sure if a blind-buy is safe for me.

...and I've always hated Lord of the Flies, so that's an easy pass. The other July releases, though, I definitely want.

I didn't bold it, but I might get Things to Come as well.

Come to think of it as far as older releases go, I should finally get Days of Heaven too.... I bought it a little while back from Hastings but it got cancelled on me so I still need to get it.

I really need to read the book before I see Things to Come, some say it is a mixture of fiction and reality.

I've seen that disc. It's non-anamorphic widescreen and looks terrible (awful transfer).

Criterion once had awful transfers, isn't that amazing? Now it seems like there is never one release they offer on blu-ray that has anything less than an above average transfer.

Children of Paradise.

But for the most part, you're right.

So here's my expected haul for the upcoming sale:

The Red Shoes
Paris, Texas
Kiss Me Deadly
Sweet Smell of Success
Wild Strawberries
Solaris

I can probably stretch for 1-2 more. Out of the following what would you suggest?

3:10 to Yuma
Repulsion
Quadrophenia
Gomorrah
Marketable Lazarova
Paths of Glory

Thanks

In general do the bluray criterions have a better transfer or is it just more extras?

I would pick those two, although if you ask me tomorrow I might go Paths of Glory over one of them.

Although there is some debate about certain titles, in general Criterion will give you the best transfer available. It is, however, always good to read reviews if you are uncertain.

Ah, that's a shame. I've just been dying to see it and I figured this was my best bet. The Russian blu that has English subs can't be imported anymore, so I had no where else to look.

My anticipated haul for the B&N sale...

Yojimbo/Sanjuro
(box set)
The Gold Rush
Modern Times
The Great Dictator
Island of Lost Souls

I'm thinking that I'll snatch these up this week with the money that I have left over after ordering my Hitchcock box set.

During the last half of July, I'll buy Lord of the Flies.

I'll probably buy Akira Kurosawa's High and Low at some point later in the month.

None of the above Blu-rays are blind buys, because I previously owned all of them on DVD before streamlining my collection in anticipation of upgrading the movies.

Thinking of getting the following DVDs in the 50% off sale:

-I vitelloni
-Flowers of St. Francis
-Young Mr. Lincoln
-Life of Brian

Just wanted to check if there have been any hints as to whether these will go to Blu any time soon? I'd hate to pick these up and then see an announcement in next month's newsletter announcements lol!

When does the B&N sale begin?

I'd love to pick up:

Eating Raoul
Videodrome
The Blob
Diabolique
Devil's Backbone

We'll see what happens.

I've read that the Russion cut is better. It omits two instances of animal cruelty and some other odds and ends that don't serve the story. I don't know why it's no longer available.
