Correct me if I'm wrong you should be able to pre-order it for the sale price...I did that last November with Brazil.

God himself rarely intervenes in the affairs of The Criterion Collection or Barnes & Noble, but I'm inclined to think that He could not quite abide with Criterion spine # 666 being available to the masses at half price on the day of release.

I'm pretty sure you can too...that's my plan

Badlands would be a blind buy, but everywhere I read is positive. I'm gonna try and get the overlap tonight on Barnes and Noble...get a buy 2 get 1 free and the half off price. So I'm trying to pick my selections.

Thanks about the avi. I WISH that was me, but it's Marilyn. Although I've been told I look similar to Audrey Hepburn (which is just as great a compliment since she's one of my all time fav actresses)

Love Malick, but Videodrome is more rewatchable for me. (Are you a Debby Harry/Blondie fan by any chance?)

I knew that it was Marilyn Monroe, so I was complimenting you on your taste in cinema icons.

Speaking of Audrey Hepburn...

Guess which Criterion Blu-ray I'm going to watch later today?

...(drumroll, please)...

Charade!

I will say that it was fun to watch Orson Welles in action during A Safe Place.

Unfortunately, I kept trying to imitate his concentrated gaze while I was watching the movie, so that I could make the movie disappear. That never happened, and the movie kept going.

I've tried this during boring work meetings as well, to no avail. I get that Orson Welles look, I close my eyes, I start wishing for things to magically disappear, and they never do. The same with random co-workers who step into my office occasionally when I'm busy.

Incidentally, here is a pretty good essay in defense of A Safe Place.

I appreciate what the film was doing, and how moviemaking was utilized in a creative way to illustrate perception of time and stream-of-consciousness thought, but...I...just...never...seem....to...want...to... watch...it...again.

I do think that this would be a pretty awesome forum avatar...

I need help choosing 4 from these 8 choices. All will be blind purchases:

The Wages of Fear
Rushmore
On the Waterfront
Blow Out
The Thin Red Line
Wings of Desire
Eating Raoul
House

What would you guys suggest?
I'd go with these four:

Wages of Fear
Rushmore
On the Waterfront
Blow Out

Rushmore is an absolute must own, in my opinion, particularly if you like offbeat comedies. One of my favorites.

It would have been awesome to have had my hands on Guillermo Del Toro's Devil's Backbone this week. Gonna have to settle for rewatching Hellboy, Cronos and maybe Pan's Labyrinth.
haha, you're funny! and my typing is sorry!

Thing Red Line would be one of those mash-ups, where it combines The Thing with Thin Red Line . . . no that wouldn't be good. Anyways, both versions of The Thing need to be spined.

I'm psyched about Pacific Rim.

In all seriousness, I would give everything I own to see Terrence Malick direct a version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, or another comparable storyline when an alien entity replicates the likenesses of human beings. With the trademark Malick voiceovers and focus on facial expression nuances, such a film could be wonderfully horrific and unnerving.

This crossed my mind during To the Wonder, in fact, during the scenes where Ben Affleck was working at his environmental job and investigating contamination. Maybe Olga Kurylenko' character felt out of place in her new setting because her loved ones were no longer, in fact, her loved ones, due to alien contamination of the water supply or something. Haha. The movie could have conceivably taken that route. Maybe Javier Bardem's priest character is seeing several people around the community acting...differently...from their normal selves. Bardem and Kurylenko end up teaming up to escape from the aliens in the town.

Jim Caviezel (V.O.): Why would God do this to us? Why would he create us just to watch us destroy-

Jim Caviezel head splits open and emits a high-pitched scream. Bearded Kurt Russell emerges from jungle and kills him with a flamethrower.

END SCENE.

Also psyched about Pacific Rim.

Don't worry, there are a lot of us that like Badlands. I think we just tend to be quieter about it than those who dislike it.

I actually just watched it for the first time a few weeks ago (mainly because I refused to watch the old, non widescreen dvd). I enjoyed it a lot, and look forward to revisiting it soon.
