Fat girl is one of the titles that I haven't been able to convince myself to pick up yet. While everyone's posting what they have picked up, maybe I'll list the titles I haven't added yet. If there's an argument to be made for adding a particular title to my collection I'm open to hearing it.

I haven't seen Fat Girl but I've seen all her subsequent films. The Last Mistress is pretty good. I'd say Bluebeard is better and probably her best film of those I've seen. Anatomy of Hell is... interesting. Not for the squeamish.

I guess I've seen most of her films...haven't seen Bluebeard but you make me want to now. I'd definitely say Fat Girl is the best, though.

Convince you to get one from that list? I'd say go for A Hollis Frampton Odyssey. You get 28 (24 listed) films ranging the whole of his career. Not a complete filmography but it will definitely whet your appetite for more of his films or more avant-garde. His style develops pretty drastically from period to period and there's probably something there for every open-minded viewer. What he had in mind for his Magellan films seem like they may have been one of the greatest cinematic achievements period. They are still worthwhile in the form they exist now. It's just unfortunate they didn't include more of his films. Here's hoping for another volume or two. I'm also currently reading a book of his writings. Really interesting stuff.

If I got that wrong and you wanted another title to add that list well... oops.

I guess I'll add Fat Girl to my watchlist too. A note about Bluebeard, I guess slight spoilers (for the spoiler sensitive, I don't think it's really a spoiler but better safe I suppose) so click the tag.

[Show spoiler]Catherine Breillat's films are always about exploring sexuality. Her films before Bluebeard were about either developed or developing sexuality in pubescent girls or young or adult women. Bluebeard is where she tries to understand the sexual expression of children. I think it's key to understanding Bluebeard that it is very much from the perspective of the two young girls, not Lola Creton's character in the story within the story. Quick aside, Lola Creton is a great discovery. She's enjoyable in Goodbye First Love and I can't wait to see her in Assayas' Something in the Air. (Goodbye First Love is directed by Mia Hansen-Løve, Assayas' wife.)

Did anyone here like Sweetie? I bought this on BD last year during a sale but haven't opened it yet. I did see the film on DVD a while ago though and thought it was one truly bizarre film. I like Jane Campion's work especially in The Piano.

Finally finished watching Le Cercle Rouge. I think I may need to watch it again because while it was a great and enjoyable film, I didn't find myself connecting much with it. While Le Cercle Rouge is undoubtedly the better film by far, I was actually left with a similar feeling as when I finished watching Cronenberg's Cosmopolis. The films both felt really cold and distanced. A lot to appreciate, not much to grasp hold of.

I'll definitely have to rewatch it at some point and I am looking forward to that, but maybe I'll enjoy Army of Shadows more when I eventually get around to checking it out. I really hope Melville's Le Samourai gets an upgrade from Criterion soon. That's the main Melville I want to check out as it seems to of inspired some movies I like a lot, plus alain delon is great.

I am also kinda in the minority although I didn't love it. It's far too cold and soulless for me to actually enjoy it but there was a lot to appreciate about it and I was never bored. It was great looking and threw a lot of ideas at me to keep my mind working all the way through and even afterwards.

That's interesting that you mention The Times of Harvey Milk, because I just rewatched it again last night and I really enjoy it. It might not be the most innovative in terms of approach, but I find it to be really well done, and it does a great job of presenting the material. Like you, I am most interested in the subject matter, but for me nothing in the presentation detracts from that. I was actually thinking about how Harvey Milk is a title that doesn't get enough mention here.

I can definitely see how some people wouldn't find it appealing, however.

yeah, I probably should have rewatched it before selling it off, and I'm sure I didn't quite appreciate it sufficiently on that one viewing. maybe I'll pick it up again someday.

I absolutely agree about its rewatchability. Probably the only reason I haven't bought it yet is that it is available at the library down the street. I actually think it is a better documentary than some of the other, more popular, documentaries Criterion has released.
