I watched the original 3:10 to Yuma last night and, having seen the remake a few months ago, I was surprised at how much the remake embellished the story. I think I like the leaner, more streamlined original, but Ben Wade's menacing coolness and charm were certainly more developed in the newer film, which I think served the story very well by increasing the tension.

if we get a Cronenberg set and a Lynch set my head will explode. If we get a Cronenberg set and a Lynch film it would be an awesome month. So I'm really psyched up for some good news.

Not exactly Criterion related, but I just got back from Pacific Rim. It's corny as hell, cliched to the very last scene, and has very little characterization going for it - yet I still enjoyed it for a good deal. It's well aware of its corniness, and wants to get itself to where it needs to be at brisk pace. The fight scenes brought a smirk to my face, with their candy-coated neon mix.

I haven't seen any other of the Summer blockbusters (nor do I intend do), but this was a nice change of pace, I suppose. It did what it was intended to do. I'd probably rank it as del Toro's worst, though. Really can't wait for his haunted house flick - that one, too, is right up his alley.

oh no, buzz kill. i kind of expected it to be kind of corny, but it'll be fun, I'm sure.

it's got to be better than World War Z (which I saw on a whim last week). it was not very good, imo at least.

Do we think the sale will end before that?

(it lists it as 7/23 on there...is this going to be another one of those 'BN gets them a couple weeks early' cases?)

The sale has been extended to 8/5 so The Devil's Backbone is well within the window now.

Edit: and it's now back on my sale list too, of course

Every Sale, you prep, research a little, and one usually still sneaks up on you. This time it's Shoah. I don't know if it's essential or not...But I could have people over, and we're having a movie length measuring contest, I really want to whip out that 9 1/2 hours and show them what's up.

I doubt they'd release both in the same month to be honest.

Yep. I recall B&N extending the sale in November as well.

You can pick up all sorts of useful information reading the B&N sale thread.

Well, maybe not 'all sorts' of useful information. Maybe just the occasional bit of useful information.

Or just this one, maybe.

Yeah, that's probably closer.

I pre-ordered Devils Backbone anyway, as I had a feeling it would be.

They did mess up my order, though. When I put my basket through, it appeared they'd taken Wild Strawberries out as it wasn't available. I put it through again, only for Wild Strawberries to suddenly become available again as soon as the order finished processing.

So I ordered it separately and have asked them to merge the order. I doubt they will

bought Life of Oharu. If Still Walking was at B&N I would have gotten that.

Also came in the mail is Blood For Dracula. I haven't read anything and this was a complete blind buy. If I like this should I watch Flesh For Frakenstein or is that not similar to Blodd For Dracula?

Ill go ahead and pickup Devil's Backbone. Would you folks go Island of Lost Souls or M? I know it's not really a fair comparison, but I love both films.

At most I would have expected some 'close call' comments but Lost Souls before M? For sure???

Didn't see that coming

(Island of Lost Souls is awfully good though, no arguing that)

I flipped a coin...it was to hard to decide...I own both and they are both equally worthy.
