They're slowly, but surely, upgrading a lot of the old DVDs. There are a few (The Silence of the Lambs, Withnail and I, etc.) that are no longer in license, but the above DVDs in my post (Stray Dog, Carnival of Souls, The Vanishing) are releases that I'm hoping will receive a Criterion Blu-ray upgrade.

Does anyone have thoughts about John Cassavetes: Five Films?

I almost blind-bought the DVD set a couple years back, but I'm glad that I waited.

I really know absolutely nothing about the movies, except that they're well-regarded in indie circles, but I've always had an odd sixth sense about the set that leads me to believe I'll enjoy watching the films. When the next 50% off sale comes along after October, I'll probably be jumping on this purchase.

Beautiful film but minimal replay value IMO. I've stopped buying everything I like and if I need to see it again I will Netflix it. Only buy what I REALLY like and will watch more than once a year....

His films are about real people, without the cliches or tropes of most Hollywood melodramas and therefore less gloss and distance. Almost like documentaries, or perhaps more accurately like being a fly on the wall in these people's lives for a time.

To each their own. I think it's a fantastic cover.

I've seen Traffic, Antichrist, The Game, Lord of the Flies and a few others. I will try a free week of HULU PLUS and am wondering which ones to view.

Thank you
All comes down to personal taste. I have over 100 Criterion's now so I have many personal favourites. Just to name a few... Kiss Me Deadly, Videodrome, The Night of The Hunter, In The Mood for Love, The Red Shoes, The Thin Red Line, Modern Times... God I could keep going. These are just some of the many I love so far (that I rewatch the most I guess but some are missing naturally) but your tastes will likely differ.

I would go with everyone's advice so far and stick to the classic's that appeal to you.

I don't dislike the cover by any means, but I do think they could have done something really exciting for it that would have updated the release a bit.

In case no one has noticed, the list prices for both I Married a Witch and The Uninvited have dropped to $29.99.

That's great news. I know a lot of us were hoping or expecting this would happen. Of course, if I wasn't already planning on buying them, this would definitely seal the deal

I rather like the idea of a "mask cover" for Eyes Without a Face, where the outer cover can be removed to reveal the true cover beneath.

That would probably be too tacky for a Criterion package, though. Almost like a Godzilla pop-up or something.
...oh, wait.

Will definitely pick up during the November sale.

And I just realized Eyes Without a Face comes out on my birthday. Looks like it will be a late present since I'm picking that up in November too.

Both look great on Criterion's Blu-rays.

Kiss Me Deadly has some awesome moments, but it's a frustrating film in a few ways as well. Sweet Smell of Success, however, is a perfect ten across the board.

Wow! Thanks again all you guys for your advice and thoughts. I didn't expect a total of 8 responses to my question (5 here and 3 before too). I probably will just end up buying both of these at this point (as octagon said in an earlier response). I'm not a huge noir fan but I can appreciate great film noir when I see it.

i really like Matt Dentler's Top 10. just reading thru some of them, and this one pops out at me because the understandable focus on American indie is nicely balanced with other sorts of films.

I've got an Excel spreadsheet that I've been maintaining for the past few years that tracks all the released and announced Criterion Blu-Rays and Eclipse series that I'd be happy to share with anyone who's interested. Just PM me your email address and I'll send it on.

I've found it really useful to maintain my collection and to determine which titles to buy during B&N's and Criterion.com's 50% off sales.

Just picked up 12 Angry Men and Black Orpheus from the B&N sale.

I just finished watching 12 Angry Men and it was astounding. The script, the acting and the ability to keep you engaged when it is set in only one room are just some of the reasons why it's such a great achievement in film.

Both of these films were blind buys, I picked up 12 Angry Men because I have heard so many great things and I figured I had to see it sometime. I am so happy I picked it up.

Now, who here has seen Black Orpheus? The premise and the cover art drove me to pick it up but what can I expect going into that film?
