The question was about foreign language titles. With titles that aren't in English but have lines or parts in English the subtitles are often only for the parts that are in a foreign language. So, for example, if a character speaking in French says a sentence in English, there will not always be subtitles for that sentence.

I watched The Battle of Algiers, too. I thought it was very similar to Army of Shadows in the way they depicted the underground resistance - I think Melville may have even been influenced by some stylistic choices within the film.

It's a monumental and haunting movie. I love how the Ennio Morricone score plays during the bombing aftermath scenes from either side, as to show that the deaths are tragedies for all.

I seldom blind-buy Criterions but went ahead and picked up The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp today at B&N because of all the glowing endorsements here.

My modest Criterion collection has tripled thanks to the B&N sale this month.

Why? Um, lemme guess, because Janus has never released one?

Then we can go case-by-case and start analyzing what's already OWNED.

The Adventures of Prince Achmed Coming to the UK in Blu via BFI
The King and the Mockingbird
Animal Farm
Perfect Blue
Watership Down (WB owns the rights to this one, though)
the films of René Laloux -- Fantastic Planet is already out in the UK on Blu via Eureka
films of Makoto Shinkai (I can dream, can't I?)
rerelease The Girl Who Leapt through Time
and various curiosos, like Princess Iron Fan
Foreign/birth-of-animation Achmed-Iron Fan curiosos are the best we can hope for, since those, like Animal Farm, are mostly Public Domain. Anything else, as noted, is spoken for, "fan reputation" or not.
(Oh, and btw, that "Criterion could do anime" thing? That dates back fouirteen years...fourteen, count 'em...to the days when Disney was considering dropping Studio Ghibli after Princess Mononoke's theatrical reception, fans got panicky, and started running to ask Grandma. I think we're in no danger of that at the moment, so you can stop running to ask Grandma about Perfect Blue and Akira.)

And no, you CAN'T dream...Especially in a Criterion thread. It bugs the heck out of everyone in the room.

That would certainly explain why I thought it was a slightly strange question... Apologies!

I had not seen The Plague Dogs in a long while, but a quick search after my above post yielded the movie in its entirety on YouTube. I just finished watching it, and it's just as much of a tearjerker as it was many years ago. I guess that this is a case of the doctor being poisoned by his own medicine.

I had forgotten about a line from The Plague Dogs being used in the song, "Testure", by Skinny Puppy.

Well done! I'm looking forward to reading some of your reviews on those.

I capped off my own haul with Identification of a Woman, because I had been intrigued by that movie for a while, and your post last week reminded me to look for it.

JW, get a HULU subscription, at $7.99 a month it is less harmful than injection heroine. [insert more angry words on cult mentality, addictions, and the decline of the western civilization here]

Ooh...i just had a thought: Penelope Spheeris' Decline of the Western Covilization Part II would be a good spine.

I don't know how I could compete with your reviews. I actually used to write a lot of film reviews but my review writing days are over now. After taking 14 film classes and majoring in Film Studies at the university, it sort of "burned me out". The best I can muster out now is maybe a few sentences and a star or number rating.

I've never been much good for HULU or any other online subscription (Netflix included). I'm more old fashioned I guess. I rent Criterions from the library and buy them during Barnes & Noble sales. That's about it. I'm happy with that.

Also, Hulu has a bunch of Criterion titles in HD that will probably never be released on blu-ray and some that were never even released on DVD.

Firstly, I would like to thank all you awesome people out there for your excellent recommendations on CC films.

... Secondly, I've a question for those of you who own the Magnificent Obsession (Criterion DVD) .. any chance they'll release it on Blu-ray?

I see there's a Italian Blu-ray (w/ English audio) - readily on Amazon.it ... any thoughts?
