Incidentally, I'm not all that worried if the new Criterion cases end up being the same size as the DVD cases, since I do not actually store my movies on a shelf, and, instead, keep them in plastic cases in two big wooden chests in my living room.

Here's my setup...
[Show spoiler]

If Criterion goes back to DVD-sized cases, then the plastic cases will simply hold a few less of those titles.

(Before anybody asks, the answer is "Yes." It does bother me that Skyfall has a white case.)

You put all those beautiful cases in a box?

I'm somewhere between Jimmy Stewart in Rope and Brad Pitt in Se7en right now.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with the cover for City Lights; I actually quite like it. I'll be sure to pick it up (along with Frances Ha) at the next B&N sale.

I had to visualize it myself, so I did this rough mock-up (original on left, mock-up on right). I think the greater contrast makes it more visually appealing, and I think the border at the bottom looks better in black too, but it could just be me.

For now. One of these days, when I get a decent shelf setup, I'll arrange things for good.

I like the way that the wooden chests look in my living room, though, and the setup takes less space.

It's worth noting that I'm a bit OCD about protecting my stuff, because I lost a lot of DVDs, books, and such in 2009 when I used to live in a bottom floor apartment, and a flash flood ended up submerging my apartment in several inches of water within a matter of minutes. Nothing gets damaged or lost in those clear plastic cases.

I don't really like the City Lights cover because it's reminiscent of their "Make Way For Tomorrow" cover and aside from the tiny mustache, he doesn't really resemble The Tramp.

All kidding aside, those plastic storage bins are great for apartment dwellers. I've got dozens of them and I'm getting to the point (read: well past the point) where I need to start keeping BDs in them.

I've got a lot of stuff I'm keeping 'just in case' and there's no reason to clutter my living room with them.

I think their intent was to highlight the white flower so they made the shirt gray.

So they are going with a combo pack for City Lights? I don't understand this, to me this makes Criterion feel cheap and low. IDK, I am just taking this really hard.

Well, actually, they have.

On LD, they had a separate "Criterion Television" run, with one disc a selection of I Love Lucy episodes, a disc of selected The Addams Family episodes, and three discs comprising the run of Robert Altman's Tanner '88.

On DVD, they re-released the Tanner '88 series, Fishing with John, Berlin Alexanderplatz, World on a Wire, and included the TV series versions of Scenes from a Marriage and Fanny and Alexander in the sets with the theatrical versions.

As to why they don't do more, less obscure TV series, it's likely a combination of the major studios releasing them themselves and preferring to put the work required into doing more movies.

All titles going forward should be combo packs. And they're called "Dual Format editions" which sounds fancier . Eureka has been doing it with their Masters of Cinema collection (Criterion equivalent in the UK) for years now (they also call it a Dual Format edition) and it doesn't cheapen anything.

Ok, but I thought DVD was on it's way out.

This could help with that. Criterion is essentially forcing DVD buyers to get the BD version. Having BD's in their home might increase the odds of some of them upgrading their equipment down the road.

They actually stopped combo releases entirely after The Blue Angel in January.
