I see there hasn't been a confirmation for the size of their cases. I'm just going to assume they're sticking with the Blu cases and give the short end to the people that are buying them for DVDs..

I sadly bought Tokyo story on Criterion DVD last month at 1/2 off criterion sale. But, I'm a huge Chaplin fan, so I'll definitely get City Lights Even though Zatoichi looks really cool, I don't think I'll get it (I've never heard about the films, the box set is really expensive, and I probably will never watch all 25 of them), but maybe I'll ask for it for Christmas. I would like to complain about the minimal amount of bonus features, but then I remember Criterion had to restore 27 films this month, so now I don't care. Over all, pretty good releases.

Sounds awesome. I started enjoying Ozu with Tokyo Story dvd I purchased a few years ago. Since then I have seen a few of his films, but I'm always interested in more. I'm really interested in Japanese culture and I believe few directors capture Japanese mentality as well as Ozu IMO.

These numbers may be a preliminary guage of interest in the latest releases:

Tokyo Story 0
Frances Ha 8
Zatoichi 0
City Lights 11

The numbers are from the collection count of each movie's page on this site. City Lights appears to be more interesting that Frances Ha. As time goes by, someone may add Tokyo Story and Zatoichi to a collection.

Actually plenty more people are interested in Toyko Story than Frances Ha. Click on the "0" for Tokyo Story and you will see a large amount of people have added it to their collection, either on their wishlist or "ordered" list. Zatoichi isn't at "0" either...

269 people own the bfi release already of tokyo story, so i dont think there is zero interessted in tokyo story. and i think alot of people know maybe kitanos zatoichi movie or the movie "ichi" and might buy this boxset as well.

im gonna get it. zatoichi is definitly a great announcement, 25 samurai classics ! for me that does beat a single movie release like le samourai or a single kurosawa

I see. 0 (zero) must mean no one owns it. Some of the Frances Ha people may put it in a category with the owned attribute, even though they don't yet have it in their possession.

I can't believe the day is finally here where City Lights is coming. I've waited which seems like forever. This is THE best Chaplin movie. A masterpiece. Everyone needs to own this.

Thank you Criterion, you just made my Blu Ray life very happy.

I wonder why the Zatoichi set doesn't contain the final (26th) Zatoichi film released in 1989 and directed by the man himself, Shintaro Katsu! Copyright issues maybe?

Is this dual format nonsense going to be used for all Criterion films on bluray going forward? I hope not. I don't know why studios do this. People who buy the BD obviously don't need the useless DVD.

Criterion has the rights to it so I don't know why it's not included.

edit: I'm wrong, it looks like they don't. I think the Mitsutomo Corporation. has rights

Some people travel with a laptop that only plays DVDs/CDs. Some laptops are dropping the internal drives, and external DVD/CD drives are a lot smaller and lighter than external DVD/CD/BD drives. I have laptop with about a 12.5" 16:9 display, without an internal drive, and the external player (DVD/BD/CD) is twice as thick as the laptop, but the external DVD/CD drive is much smaller and lighter.

Don't a lot of new laptops (sans Apple) come with a Blu-ray drive now?

"November marks the first month that all new Criterion releases are dual-format editions, including both Blu-ray and DVD. Note that all supplemental features will be available to users of both formats."

Welp. No more Criterions for me. I stopped buying DVD years ago. I hate having to throw away the DVD's in combo packs and have an unused disc holder in my case. Ugh.

This is another reason why BD will never replace DVD. It seems like studios are afraid to let go.

EDIT- The cases seems taller now too?????

So does this mean the price will go up slightly?

I don't see why you would stop buying Criterions simply because it includes a DVD now. Nothing changes, and it shouldn't really affect anything to have it in the case.

The cases won't be taller, Criterion simply uses DVD sized pics on their site. Wait till Amazon has pics up, we should see the proper BD sized images.

No, the prices aren't affected at all. They're still $39.99, just like they were when only a BD was included.
