I was speaking in general terms, to say the least. How about "offscreen misconduct"?

I just got back from the gym, and I'm tired, so cut me some slack.

Driving too fast in your 300k Ferrari and partying too much are offscreen antics.

Just watched 1956's B&W Cinemascope Love Me Tender. Now, I'm scared to re-watch Criterion's 400 Blows. It's Dyaliscope and three years younger, but I don't remember its video quality coming close to that of Love Me Tender.

I can perfectly understand why people choose to avoid Polanski. But those who do - what about Chaplin for that matter?

As I previously posted, I was speaking in general terms, and not just about Roman Polanski in my above post. I'll agree, though, that the choice of words is better suited for actors like Tom Cruise. Or for the off-chance that a Miley Cyrus movie is picked up by the Criterion Collection someday.

And when law enforcement does it, the cases generally get thrown out, because there's such a thing as guidelines. It's called entrapment. But whatever. Fact is, the Judge lied to get a guilty plea, then renegged on the details of the plea bargain. If you think that's fair, then I don't know what to tell ya. And yes, even Polanski deserved a fair trial under US law.

Polanski claims he was told the judge was going to reneg - There's no actual evidence for it though, right?

If we get Persona and either or both of the Cronenbergs in the next announcement, Criterion will be closing a fantastic year out with another stellar month. Looking at the list of upcoming releases already, there's only two releases that I'm not convinced into picking up.

I don't want to continue beating this horse, but...You are probably talking about Mildred Harris, no? She was 16 or 17, could be considered understandably gross for a man of his age, but legal in many states. That is also common age for sexual experiences in our society (I don't think it should be with a 29yr old). 13? Not so much. That is a child. He also ended up marrying her. He also did not drug and rape her. Bit of a difference.

The first hour or so tested my patience a little, but after that I was completely captivated. The vibrancy of the colors just wowed me all the way through. Scorsese's introduction is expectedly great. The film has got me considering giving The Red Shoes a second shot after only making it through half an hour the first time (mostly due to how exhausted I was.)
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp was a perfect blind-buy for me, and it's one of the best Technicolor transfers that I've ever seen. I'm glad that you enjoyed it!

My Pathe Blu-ray of Le Samourai just arrived. I ordered and received the 2012 French Blu-ray, which improves on the 2011 release by removing the watery filter look, but the screencaps on this website indicate that the scrubbed look is still apparent.

I'm going to watch it tonight, and I'll give a full report.

No English subtitles on this French release, but I've pretty much memorized the Criterion DVD subtitles anyway, and Le Samourai does not exactly overwhelm the viewer with dialogue anyway.

What's this? Another Polanski debate that amounts to nothing? Okay, then.

[Show spoiler]He's an incredible filmmaker and I'll continue to see his films until he dies.

Received "Kiss Me Deadly" yesterday, had to send it back today. The package was afflicted with the dreaded "loose disc floating around in the case" issue. Tried it out, about 1:20 in, it froze for several minutes and you miss a key part of the movie. After about 2-3 minutes, it picks back up but no way I'm keeping it.

What a shame, at least the replacement will be here soon.

He married two 17-year-old young girls and a 16-year-old. His second wife began acting in his films at age 12 and became pregnant by him at age 15. I never meant to imply that there is no difference. Nonetheless Chaplin can be classified as pedophiliac (or as ephebophiliac). The fact that he ended up marrying them doesn't make it less disputable.

I know this may be asking a lot, but can we at least try to keep the conversation about the Criterion Collection?

Speaking of which, Janus confirmed today that Criterion will be releasing La Grande Bellazza.

Lita Grey. She was 16 when she became pregnant, and there is no indication that anything happened when she worked with him once or twice at age 12. Marriage did make a difference...legally that is. Marrying her in Mexico made the relationship legal in California. Like I said, I don't consider it a appropriate relationship, but there is no comparing the two (I know you're saying you are not, but you are by bringing it up with the Polanski situation).

Has anyone here seen Frances Ha? I enjoyed Greenberg a lot...can't wait to see Noah Baumbach team up with Greta Gerwig again.
