Haven't seen this one but I enjoyed the remake. I normally dislike Christian Bale ad an actor but he did really good in it, and Rusell Crowe seemed to be enjoying himself as well.

I enjoyed the remake a lot more because of the backstory of Dan Evans. Throughout the story, we see this relationship unfold between not only Ben and Dan, but also Dan and his son. Also, the long trip it takes to get to the train is a lot more powerful in the remake because we're right there with them. With the original you get, "we're leaving" and then the next see, "we're here".

It's a BD / DVD combo pack. I think the best price is $19.99 on Amazon.

How do "Broadway" and "The Last Performance" compare to "Lonesome"?

A day or two late ... Here are my Kubrick favorites in order ..

2001
The Shining
Clockwork Orange
Full Metal Jacket
Eyes Wide Shut
Dr Strangelove
Lolita

Can someone please explain all the love for Barry Freaking Lyndon ?? This film is excruciating to watch ... I get the available light thing ... I get the attention to detail ... I don't get the horribly long story. I always though it was ... Meh.

Maybe I need to revisit it ... Dunno.

Although I prefer the fllm's maze ending (not the lame Twilight Zone epilogue), the rest of the movie just got everything wrong. I side with King on this. The book is one of the great horror stories. The movie, not so much. For what it is, it's a decent slow burn horror film... but as an adaptation of The Shining, it's pretty God awful.

Just heard about the passing of Julie Harris. I'll always remember her primarily for The Haunting and East of Eden both of which will soon be available on Blu-ray. I did notice she's one of the featured players in The Golden Age of Television set from Criterion.

So not to bring back up the whole Roman Polanski issues, but yesterday I got Carnage for my birthday. Looking forward to seeing what all the buzz (about the movie) is all about.

I see the "boycott conversation" had the opposite effect on you

So was roaming around B&N yesterday, making my Criterion wish list, and noticed that not only do they have the buy 2 get the 3rd for free, I also noticed that have a "get a free Criterion, 99 Reasons sampler dvd with any purchase. "I asked the clerk if, since my wife bought four CC blus last week, if I could bring back the receipt and get the sampler. She called her manager and they said just give it to him! So, score.

http://criterioncast.com/contest/win-a-99-reasons-dvd/

I was also trying to see what films would make a good CC release and thought about Citizen Kane. I have seen the new 70th Anniversary edition, but I'm wondering if CC could do anything else with it... if they could get the rights, and there could be anything else done. Same thing with A Streetcar Named Desire.

Anyway, if you don't have the 99 Reasons sampler, they've got them at B&N.

Well, I won't say they had the opposite effect, and generally I think he's kind of a scumbag, but he is a great director. I do want to watch the documentary to get the other side of the story. Plus, I figure if people can watch Woody Allen movies, and not give him crap, people can watch Roman Polanski. I know it's not the same, but Woody's situation is really creepy and kind of wrong as well. And I wonder if some of those have the same opinion and boycott of Elia Kazan? I mean he's supposed to be such an evil man and un-American because he "named names." /rant

Now back to all the happiness! Yay movies!!

Pretty much the same here. It took me 3 sessions to finish it or I would have fallen asleep. I do appreciate the craftsmanship and all, but it basically bored me to tears.

While I do appreciate Polanski's movies and wouldn't be exhorting anybody to boycott them, comparing his actions and Elia Kazan's naming names under pressure of a government appointed committee is horribly inappropriate.

No it isn't. The ramifications of what Kazan did could very well have been worse. It is not inappropriate at all to compare the two.

Aw, now, y'see, maybe it's me, I was paying more attention to what was happening IN the story...
(And what was happening was...pretty nasty.)

I watched Carnage on TV not long ago. It was a free movie offering on my Comcast On-Demand services. I enjoyed the film thoroughly. The acting was mesmerizing.

I still think The Ghost Writer is his best film in recent years though.

Naming already named names is akin to drugging and raping a child? Ok.
