I love that film and can watch it over and over and over and over and over again! It's even better every time you see it again. I mean, just hearing the stories of the cast and crew while they were making this crazy film is just amazingly entertaining.
Definitely! It's influence is simply something that cannot be denied. I'm with Owl on this one. There are stretches that provoke unintentional laughter, but as a whole, it's a great piece of entertainment. Chiefly because of the soundtrack. I'll never forget the moment when I first heard that Steppenwolf song blasting through my speakers. Just aaaaa.

In the Realm of the Senses is something that I'll never tire of (pun intended). On top of being a fluid piece of motion picture art, it feels powerful, it offers insight into, well, the senses that give us out humanity.

This is an excellent read on the film, if you're interested:

(3) The Sacrifice

(5) Stalker
(6) The Mirror
(7) Solaris
Cheers! I'm really keen to see Stalker as well but Ivan's Childhood looks more enjoyable than Solaris. Would appreciate some more opinions

Give me the weekend Deep breaths. I have yet to see my copies of Ivan's Childhood and The Sacrifice

So far, the three I've seen are all perfect (and thus, impossible to rank):

•Solaris (my favorite Scifi film of all time), •Stalker, •Andrei Rublev (possibly my favorite religious-themed film after The Last Temptation of Christ).

Sorry if I am not much help, but I'll be sure to give you my take on the two Tarkovsy blurays waiting to be watched

Thanks for the article! Gonna bookmark it now.

Yes, Easy Rider is just plain awesome. I love the free spirited nature of the story and the characters. In the end, if I had to take 10 movies with me to a desert island (or doomsday bunker), Easy Rider would be one of them. What I love most is the philosophy and existentialism brought up in some of those stories around the campfire. The movie is about freedom and especially American freedom. Just taking the motorcycle out on the open highway and get into adventures "and whatever comes our way"... oh yeah, I just love that warm vinyl sound of that Steppenwolf song. It sounds like a vinyl master on the soundtrack too. Give me liberty or give me death... as Patrick Henry once said.

Thanks and no problem mate I understand the love and I'm really glad I saw Solaris but I didn't enjoy the overall experience as much as I thought I would. I'll have to return to it one day.

I'm not much of a fan of religious movies, or at least not pro-Christian ones. Hence why I haven't seen The Last Tempation of Christ, despite the fact that I love Martin Scorsese as a director. His catholic beliefs creep in a bit too heavily at times for my liking but he's tremendously talented and I enjoy his movies a lot regardless. I don't think I would enjoy The Last Temptation of Christ much though. Nothing wrong with the movie. It's my issue

Anyway, do let me know how you like (or dislike) Ivan's Childhood after you've seen it

Thumbs up

Watched The Spy Who Came in from the Cold tonight and highly recommend it. A great performance by Richard Burton. The production value is very high and the plot certainly keeps the viewer interested. did I mention it looks fantastic in Blu ?

I bought For All Mankind on sale for like 20 bucks. It was fantastic. Great blind buy for anyone interested in the Apollo Space Program.

For those interested in the upcoming Rossellini films, I would also recommend tracking down a copy of Marcello Pagliero's Roma, città libera.

Some of the key themes in the film are very similar to those in Europe '51. It was also lensed by the great Aldo Tonti, with a score by Nino Rota (The Godfather). With Vittorio De Sica and Valentina Cortese.

I don't know if you could still track down a copy, but if you can, I strongly recommend adding it to your library. The DVD uses a transfer that was struck from the original 35mm negative and the film looks fantastic.

I'll put it this way. My wife loved Ivan's Childhood and was gripped. I wouldn't dream of making her watch Solaris - it's just not her cup of tea and a totally different experience. I do like both but Ivan's Childhood is wonderful.

I'll never forget when my mom first heard that Steppenwolf song blasting from my radio. (Back in the day when FM radio was pretty incredible, several months before Easy Rider came out (in the Chicago area anyway).) Had a little explaining to do that day, good thing by then I'd heard it several times already...

I've briefly compared my (awesome) Italian DVD of Europa '51 with the caps and I must say, I'm disappointed. Even tho they're "only caps", it's easy to see flaws. Firstly, I like the contrast better on the DVD, and the BD looks just too bright in many scenes. Plus, I really don't know if CC have "digitalized" a tad too much the longer version, or if they couldn't get the same print I have here, because I see some noise and damage which I can't detect on the DVD print. I'll pass on this one (already got the unmatchable Italian BD of Viaggio in Italia, so...) and wait for another edition, this masterpiece needs a full restoration or a better treatment - not that I'm not happy with the DVD.

ps. however, thanks for the useful review!

Is a 3.5 video rating a low for a Criterion release, anyway? Or are there others with an even lower review score here at blu-ray.com? Just curious.

Les Enfants du Paradis and Madame de... off the top of my head.

After flipping through the DVD collection on the Criterion site i was amazed how many titles are missing on BLU
They really got to focus on the older catalogue and release the titles they still have the rights to.

That's only side of the coin, many people would want them to focus on never-previously-released titles instead of just upgrades. Also in the case of much older DVD's they may require to make new scans and HD masters worthy of the blu-ray format. In some cases HD masters may not be currently possible. so it's not all apple pie for blu-upgrades too. They're doing good, with a mixture of upgrades and new titles.

Just checked. Sorry, only the dubbed cut (and Italian subs only).
The cuts were both approved by Rossellini and they differ by a coupla minutes (the DVD runtime of the International is 81'42", where the Italian one is 79'24"). It's just a longer sequence, if I'm not mistaken.

However, the BFI should be releasing this soon (maybe they'll be able to include both versions, who knows).

Thanks for the info. I have BFI's BD on order ... it keeps getting delayed.
