Actually no, but i do appreciate your interesting write-ups.

Besides, there's Amazon Prime/Hulu... so YouTube is not all that talk worthy.

I cannot believe I forgot the Lino Ventura stars in Elevator to the Gallows. The man was an unstoppable force of nature of awesomeness. It's great to revisit this movie.

This movie needs to be upgraded to Blu-ray immediately. The Miles Davis score is just icing on one big incredible cake.

How about Magnificent Obsession - it was such a nice film, this movie equally deserves some attention from Criterion.. apparently there's a Italian Blu-ray, but they say it's sub-par.

This movie intrigues me, but I still have not seen it. It's one of those Blu-rays that I debated checking out on DVD, but never did.

Also, with all of the Vivien Leigh stuff coming out from Cohen Media, I want Criterion to upgrade That Hamilton Woman to Blu-ray.

...and for them to keep the gorgeously sensual cover art.

[Show spoiler]

That Hamilton Woman is also worth it for the epic naval battle sequence.

Its only a matter of time before the big CC releases it. So I will just hold out.

Hopefully it hits next year

I've been hoping for/asking/predicting some Sirk on Blu Ray since Criterion has started releasing Blu Rays.

Sure, that's a good recommendation... I know Criterion's quite culturally diverse with it's Blu-ray releases but i think it needs to release way more American classics in HD.

I incorrectly thought the tenant and eraserhead were coming out in December so I rented Lost Highway and Carnage. Both really good movies hopefully Lost Highway gets CC treatment! Classic Lynchian movie halfway I was like what the hell is going on here!? Carnage was a solid small movie great cast, def check them out

Yes, that's true - I too was anticipating Eraserhead this year, guess maybe next.
... I think at some point i'll give in and order the UK David Lynch Collection.

As for Carnage, I recently picked it up and instantly loved it.

Just finished watching MOC's release of The Passion of Joan of Arc, knocking off what was probably the longest standing film on my watchlist. I was left stunned the entire way through. Some of the images was incredibly startling, especially the torture chamber and everything that makes up the film's conclusion. Falconetti's performance is one of the most committed performances I've seen put to film. I don't know what it was about it, but I loved the shots of the flails being thrown out of the window. The way they were photographed was mesmerizing.

I'm curious to see what Criterion brings to the table with their inevitable upgrade, because the supplements on this release are lackluster.

Sirk is a director screaming for HD love (in the US at least).

Magnificent Obsession is my favorite but I'd expect All That Heaven Allows and Written On The Wind to get upgraded first.

The comic is almost certainly going to be included in the eventual release.
So it looks like this isn't happening (Ain't Them Bodies Saints on Criterion), right?

Agreed. I saw this film earlier in the year for the first time (on YouTube, hehe) and while it was quite slow in the first half, I really dug it. I was caught off guard by a jump scare and the horror imagery and camera angles were awesome, it managed to disturb me in parts, and Deneuve is a beauty. The only thing I didn't get was the ending, before the final shot. But it was great, I made it a priority in my haul this past July.

1. The actual restoration work is typically done in 2K.

2. The scanning could be done in 2K, 4K, etc. There are different factors that would determine how and where the actual work is done - the project, finances available to operate with, the people involved with the project, etc.

3. 4K does not automatically equate top quality. Projects such as Les enfants du paradis are a prime example why. On the other hand, scanning technology and the scanning/resto jobs in general have become incredibly good during the last 2-3 years. I personally have been very impressed with a number of 2K transfers done on ARRISCANs.

4. Many restorations, including the scanning which you are concerned with, are done overseas. So in many cases the final master Criterion would have to work with is already done by a different party. The overwhelming majority of these jobs have been outstanding. Examples: See A Night to Remember for a top 2K job, and Marketa Lazarova for a top 4K job.

The projects Criterion have undertaken and have been supervised by their team have been outstanding. See Purple Noon.

All in all, in the hands of the right people 2K and 4K jobs could be equally impressive.

I hope this helps

Pro-B
Thank you very, very much Pro-B! This sheds some light on some questions regarding the scanning/restoration. It seems like this is a VERY complex situation because certain people/studios decide whether there is a 2k or 4k scan even before Criterion receives the master/negative. It never occurred to me that a 2k scan, transfer or restoration might be of a higher quality than a 4k version (if done on the best equipment and by the best people). I guess whenever 4k Blu-rays become available, then 4k scanning will have to be a requirement, since a 2k scan put out on a 4k resolution disc (for 4k HDTVs) will not be sufficient enough (or utilizing/taking advantage of the technology).
