I don't know if there's a prior thread on this so I'll ask anyway:
Why was there never a criterion blu ray release of the Robocop ? Was it ever planned?

There was never a Criterion Blu-ray release of Robocop because the Detroit Police Department deemed it illegal and would sue the film distributor for any future release of the film in high definition.

The only thing that bothered me about it was the creative license taken with the geography and the grotto (which wasn't named, but, given the location, is based on the much larger Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend).

But I assume 99.9% of viewers haven't spent as much time driving around northern Iowa as I have.

Their DVD license for the film was for a limited time and expired expired long before they started releasing BDs. I discovered that it was discontinued the hard way when my DVD collection was stolen and I couldn't replace it (or Silence of the Lambs).

seriously? I'm just wondering . . . sounds like a pretty kooky situation, and wouldn't that be considered some kind of censorship or violation of the rights of the government to contain free speech? Again, just wondering.

In 2010 or 2011, I remember it was heavily rumored that Criterion had relicensed RoboCop and that there would be a Blu, but nothing ever came of it.

I hope so, it's one of my all-time favorite movies and a new CC release would be awesome.

I haven't been on this thread for a while, and when I come back, I realize the January announcements are only in 4 days? I came back at a good time!

No. Their license expired a long time ago. DVD release has been out of print since 2001 and Blu-ray release was never planned.

I wouldn't be surprised to see The Great Beauty announced, with Janus handling the upcoming US theatrical release.

They should make it a double-feature with "La Dolce Vita".

Refin was at Criterion's headquarters recently, I'm not sure what the nature of the visit was however.

Probably begging for Le Samorai to be released on BluRay.

If I had to guess I'd say it was just to shoot the video of him shopping in their closet. Hope I'm wrong, but then again if I buy this set I hope I'm right! I just thought I'd ask because it seems like it'd be in the works by now from someone. The remake has an HD transfer!

He was probably begging for The Vanishing to be released on Blu-ray as well. Woo hoo!

In related news...

It appears as though Eyes Without a Face will be my lone Criterion purchase in October, since I just made a massive order on ImportCDs for some non-Criterion titles. It's all good, though, because everything else can wait for the big November sale.

Could be.

In the past they have made those videos to announce a blu by the filmmaker at a later date, or the person there was doing special feature work (Alec Baldwin).

I know there was talk of a special edition of Drive at one point. That would drive me wild.

I just hate re-buying stuff. With that $, I'd rather add a film to my collection that wasn't there before. I guess if there isn't even a murmur on the net about an HD transfer of these films, it will still be years off so maybe I'm safe for a bit.

I enjoyed Alec Baldwin's extra on the Seconds Blu-ray.

Mayhaps Refin was in the studio to record an extra for Michael Mann's Thief.
