Not particularly. It felt very slow-paced and I often had trouble figuring out what everybody's role was.

RW agree-when Grace approaches the camera/Stewart. Although I must say as many times as he keeps pushing her away with his "two different worlds" speeches I just want to jump into the scene and, at least, break his other leg.
V if for no other reason the Bernard Herrmann score and that almost psychedelic sequence with Stewart's head.
After these: Psycho, Lifeboat, and The Birds would be my next choices.
LOL..I so agree about Rear Window. I love that movie, but Grace Kelly walks into your apartment looking (and sounding..one of the sexiest voices ever) like THAT and all you can do is talk about how different you both are? C'mon.
  1. Vertigo
  2. North By Northwest
  3. Notorious

So one could say rear window, vertigo and north by northwest get a lot of love, followed by Rebecca and Lady vanishes.

To catch a thief seems to be on the lighter side, I love that one, when Grace Kelly smoothly kisses Cary Grant on her hotel room door priceless

I watched Vertigo yesterday and couldn't quite understand why when Jimmy Stewart meets Kim Novak half movie after the "suicide" Hitchcock decided to give away the murder plot right away. I guess maybe to put her on the spot so you root for Jimmy Stewart while torturing her.

I have to check Lifeboat, I think maybe is the only Hitchcock I've never seen.

Watched Kiss Me Deadly tonight. It wasn't what I expected but it was certainly quite interesting. Mike Hammer is such a bastard lol

On the Hitchcock front, my top 3 in order would be Vertigo, North By Northwest, and Strangers On A Train. Those are the three I couldn't live without.

Bought the Blu Ray of it when it came out and then was surprised that I hadn't seen it before! What a treat to see a Hitchcock that was new to me! It's not my favourite, but it is fun for sure.

Lifeboat is great, the MoC release from the UK is excellent and contains two of Hitch's short propaganda films too!

I love the variety of the Hitchcock lists here, and the best thing is that there is no wrong answer. Any of the films mentioned in this thread could have landed in my own Top Three.

On the commentary track to Rear Window, Grace Kelly is compared to a cat who simply walks into a room and makes it her home whether she is welcome there or not. It's a great comparison, and it makes me laugh each time I revisit the film.

Unrelated, but I just finished watching From Here to Eternity for the first time. Wow. What a great movie! I'm probably going to live with this movie for a couple of days by watching the commentary track and all of the extras.

I like To Catch a Thief but one thing drives me crazy-that damned striped shirt Cary Grant wears shimmers (moir'e effect?) that it is beyond distracting. Don't have the Blu (or dvd) but every broadcast I've seen has me wishing he'd hurry up and change. Is this tamed on the Blu-ray?

I've seen far less De Palma than Hitchcock, but between Snake Eyes, Passion, Femme Fatale and Dressed To Kill, I'm inclined to agree. Sisters, Blow Out and Carrie are just icing on the cake at this point.

My top 3 of Hitchcock's films would be The Lady Vanishes, Rear Window, and Frenzy. I never get tired of them. The Lady Vanishes is easily his best British film (even if The 39 Steps is close). Rear Window is the peak of his Hollywood career (and I find North by Northwest to be a bit overlong). Frenzy was Hitchcock's last great film - especially after the mediocrity of Marnie and Torn Curtain and the utter failure of Topaz.

I need to see more De Palma, but I don't think anyone will ever dethrone Hitchcock as my favorite director. He's responsible for about 15 genuinely great films, in my opinion - and even most of his "less good" films have a lot to offer and are fun to watch.

My top 3:

Vertigo
Strangers on a Train
The 39 Steps

I cannot wait to see Passion next month. If I am not mistaken, Sisters is airing on TCM later this month.

Oh yeah, before I forget: TCM will show L'Eclisse in a couple hours.

what a great description to the way her character moves and behaves in JS apartment! I need to see the movie with commentary on!

I can't tell you if it is tamed, but TCAT is one of the best looking transfers I've seen in a movie on bluray, it looks amazing.

My top 3 Hitchcock:

Psycho
North by Northwest
Dial M for Murder

I love Dial M, except a part of me wishes it hadn't been shot in the 1950's, and
[Show spoiler] Ray Milland got away with it in the end. His plan is pretty ingenious, and the way he's caught I thought more dumb luck than deduction on the part of the detective. It reminds me of Notorious, with that idiotic ending tacked on to appease the production code. I love how smarmy Milland is too, he's awesome.

Is Topaz worth persisting with? I started watching it the other day and found it very dull at the beginning.

It's absolutely worth finishing. It's not great (particularly given some of the company it keeps) but it's definitely not bad either.

There's a good chance that it's because it was my introduction to his work, but Passion may be my favorite De Palma film. I'll absolutely be picking it up.
