Another super lame month from Criterion. Why Criterion? Why?

BTW, I don't think I've ever paid less than $19.99 for any Criterion BD even after a sale. Is there a particular reason why this title will be $15?
It's MSRP is only $29.95 so it drops to $15 right off the bat when the B&N sale starts.

...

If you had to pick six titles for Criterion to release in a given month, what would they be?

Sorcerer is being released by Warner and Possession is scheduled to come out sometime next year from a different company.

Scanners is going to eventually come out by Criterion and Shivers has the potential to come out, but why on earth would they release Kindergarten Cop or Snow Queen? lol

throne of blood is already reason enough to call it a "great" month

and The Long Day Closes sounds absolutly amazing.

+ Possession & scanners was already released in the UK.

Snow Queen is an incredible Russian cartoon. As good as anything Disney has ever made. It deserves a proper release.

EXACTLY! Love it for precisely this reason.

Just picked up Salo, solely for the fact it's banned in so many countries.

It looks wonderful. Fiennes seems to fit in just right with Anderson's aesthetic. His running away was the best part.

Sadly, I don't think that I ever did listen to the commentary when I had the DVD. I will remedy this oversight when I get the Blu-ray.

It'll be a while, though. I'm up to my neck in film noir Blu-rays now (and that's a good thing!), and will make room for other stuff in a few months.

The annual membership fee for Barnes & Noble is $25. My opinion - these two semi-annual sales aren't what they're cracked up to be... BUT, it does depend on how many Criterion Collection films you figure you will buy in a year and which films you buy.

I made a quick little spreadsheet to sort of determine how many films you have to buy in a year in order for the $25 to pay itself back. The answer to that is about 8 - so 4 in the summer sale and 4 in the autumn sale. That is - to just break even.

When I say that it 'depends on which films you buy,' there are titles that you can buy at Amazon for less than what B&N offers them at during their sale. Rushmore is an example. $15.50 right now on Amazon brand new. $18.00 at B&N with their sale and your membership. Sure, you can get it for $14.40 with a 20% coupon, but you can only use that coupon once and would be better served to use it on a pricier film.

I know that many people here will easily buy 8 in one sale, but for those who build their collection a bit more slowly, you might as well just shop at Amazon. Also, if you don't mind buying in 'like new' condition, there are deals 24/7 365. I defy anyone to pick out the half dozen or so blu-rays in my collection that were bought in that condition. They function and appear the same as those for which I was able to tear the cellophane wrapper off myself.

Don't forget, though, there are other sales than just this one. I take advantage of 20% off member coupons during the 40% off all Blu Rays sale. This alone makes the membership worth it. Add to it the Criterion sale, and the $25 membership easily pays for itself 5-fold.

how many times a year do they have the 40% sales? at 40% off of the averaged priced Criterion ($39.99) and then a 20% coupon, you are looking at $19.20. just picked a random $39.99 title and checked the price on Amazon. Paris, Texas is $19.99 - no sales, no tax, no membership fee.

also, if you use the price tracking function on this site, you'll notice that for just about any film you might have on your wish list, you can see that Amazon will drop their prices in November for holiday sales.

The problem with this is that your copy of Paris Texas ordered without a membership fee from Amazon is getting charged shipping unless you order more with it. Plus, a lot of us pay tax at Amazon.

Also, the 40% off sale is all blu. It's not a Criterion specific sale.
