The first time I saw Gomorrah, the direction made me think of Robert Altman.

Yes. It's the Fox Blu-ray release of Laura. I watched the film itself last night, then immediately watched the film again with the first commentary track. Tonight, I'm planning to watch the second commentary track and one or two of the documentaries.

I'm not actually rewatching the film three times to learn anything from the commentary tracks. I'm just rewatching it to look at Gene Tierney some more. Don't judge.

As not to spam this thread entirely with non-Criterion material, I'll add that Laura was directed by Otto Preminger, and that it's an earlier demonstration of the strengths that he utilized with Anatomy of a Murder years later.

I wasn't comparing it to a Scorsese gangster flick or any other films for that matter, so I don't think I'm delusional or close minded because the majority of people here feel differently to myself. I have a very varied taste in cinema. Gomorrah just wasn't doing it for me. I don't feel I have given it a good enough chance so I wouldn't ever say its bad. I'm sure it's terrific. I'll return to it eventually. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood.

Can anyone recommend some good films with a really dark or even trashy feel to it that would fall into the noir, b-movie or horror genre's from the 50's to 60's. Examples of what I'd like is something like Kiss Me Deadly, Shock Corridor, The Naked Kiss, Bigger Than Life, The Night of the Hunter.

I really like movies from this time period that were under appreciated, pretty edgy or even shocking for the time. There's a kind of flavour to them that really works for me.

Eyes Without a Face was my first thought. I know that I've overstayed my welcome repeatedly pimping this film here in the thread, but it's that good.

Anatomy of a Murder was quite lurid with its subject matter for the time, and it's still a trip to watch today.

I would not go so far as to say that these films are trashy, but there is an undeniable element of subversion where I feel as though I'm getting away with something by watching them.

Not a Criterion (though it should be) . . . the first thing that comes to mind is Nightmare Alley, it's pure pulp film noir and, like you, I love that kind of thing. Another neat one is Roadhouse.

I cannot link it from my iPhone now, but I wrote a User Review for Revanche, and it can be found on the page for that movie or on the link under my avatar. I got a little carried away with my long-windedness in that review, as I periodically do, but it really is a lovely film.

I love Happy Together but I think In the Mood for Love is an improvement. Happy Together doesn't quite reach its potential because the leading men just come off really... Straight. The pain and raw emotion is believable enough but it was rare that I believed they were lovers. Still, it's a beautifully shot film.

Thanks for the recommendations! I was already planning on picking up Eyes without a Face and I own Anatomy of a Murder which was unbelievably good. Those 2 hours and 40 minutes went by so briskly and it certainly had an edge to it that I loved.

I can't find anything on Roadhouse but Nightmare Alley sounds cool. I love pulpy noirs and 50's-60's B-Movies with an edgy tone that feels a bit far removed from the typical Hollywood fare (not that I don't love Hollywood classics from that era, but that's not what this conversation is about).

Laura is a film that I revisit occasionally because I can relate to the Dana Andrews character who becomes obsessed with the beautiful woman in the picture. Goddess worship I suppose.

check out Road House here (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040740/). Sorry, the title was two words.

I'll be revisiting Happy Together tomorrow and I can't wait. I think that with another viewing it might solidify itself as my favorite WKW as well. Right now, that belongs to 2046, which is unfortunately the only title I won't be revisiting this week, as I don't own the DVD.

I enjoy the second half much more, but I think the fact that it is so concentrated and not stretched out definitely benefits it. Plus, I think the juxtaposition of the two stories lends itself greatly to the film.

I was not as taken by it as most around here seem to be. A very good film nonetheless, but in my opinion, it ranks near the lower end of Criterion's 2000-present titles.

Give The Narrow Margin a go too, it was shot on a really low budget but man did they make the best of it.
One of the best noirs ever!

Or The Set-Up. I also love Nicholas Ray's On Dangerous Ground. Robert Ryan is the man! A shame they're not Criterion or Blu. (yet!)

Okay, well I would be highly interested in knowing your thoughts about that film after you've seen it again.
