Have you seen Death and the Maiden? It's a really interesting little film Polanski directed. Criterion needs to release this one!
Found a DVD copy of it a few months back and loved it. One of Sigourney Weaver's best performances. Add it to the list of great 'one-setting' movies as mostly all of it is 3 characters in a house. A very thoughtful script with the way it deals with the idea of revenge.

Dunaway's performance is so good, that even when you've seen the movie several times before, and know what's going on, it feels like you don't really know what her big secret is.

One of the all time great performances. It's too bad her career fizzled out in the 80s.

I can't agree. It played into Gittes' "been there, done that" approach to his work. You get the feeling that at this point in his career, he'd seen it all, and nothing would surprise him. Well...surprise!

I watched The Petrified Forest last night and loved it. It's fast-paced and fun, but also a lot more emotionally resonant than I was expecting. Humphrey Bogart shines in one of his first career-defining roles, but Leslie Howard and Betty Davis are just as memorable.

With these films in the Ultimate Gangster Collection: Classics, I've been watching the lead-in material before each film (previews, newsreels, Merry Melodies cartoons, movie shorts), so it's quite fun to get the full effect.

All of this Chinatown talk is arousing my interest, and I hope that the film will be waiting for me when I get home on Sunday. This was a blind buy for me, but 10 dollars was the right price, and I've been curious about the film for a long while.

It obviously followed many 1940's Hollywood tropes, but that was something I expected going in. Cecil Kellaway's performance is a comedic highlight. The artwork Criterion put together for this release is also some of my favorite this year.
I watched it yesterday as well. I really liked it, too. Very entertaining and Veronica Lake was great. Can't wait to grab it for $15 at the B&N sale.

Thanks for the review! When I Married a Witch was announced, I planned to buy it on Day One. That film fell by the wayside on my priority list, and I still have not purchased it, but I'm glad to read some positive feedback.

I likely wouldn't have grabbed it right away if it weren't for it being one of Criterion's "budget" titles. I placed an ImportCDs order for a few of the October releases and it didn't set me back too much more than it would have if I waited for the B&N sale. Well worth it to have this, The Uninvited, and Eyes Without A Face before Halloween.

Digging all the Chinatown love. What a damn fine movie that holds up so well upon repeat viewings.

As for The Ninth Gate... I actually like it. Its fun entertainment but I have no real emotional investment in anything to do with it. It's probably as bad as they say but I saw it young so I appreciate it in the same way that I like JC's Ghosts of Mars. They're not good but they're fun.

I have the original issue (before the Warner reissue) and it includes a booklet! I don't know if the repackage does, but I thought it worth mentioning.

I love movies like 'I Married a Witch', they just have so much charm and are such a joy to watch. Can't wait to pick it up during the B&N Nov. sale. And as another poster mentioned the cover art is absolutely gorgeous too.

Yeah I have the original Paramount release as well. I like the cover art better on it(I think that is the original art) and it comes on a nice glossy slipcover. Not that the Warner Steelbook re-release is any slouch though.

I don't know about the rest of you but I can't believe Criterion hasn't put out 'Ruggles of Red Gap' yet. I mean I am very content with my MOC UK copy but if I didn't have region free capabilities I would be like "come one Criterion, let's get a move on it". Ruggles is just such a classic and such an enjoyable watch.

Could anyone point out the differences between the original Scenes from a Marriage and the re-issue?

Is it just the cover having the new C logo, or is there any other differences? Is the packaging the same?

Cheers.

On the other hand you may have people saying "Hey Eureka, where's Stagecoach? Where's The Man Who Knew Too Much? Where's frikkin' Godzilla?!" Every studio has a limit on how much they can do, and for me as a movie collector (as opposed to spine number connoisseur ) , it's awesome that different studios are doing different things rather than have multiple editions of the same. Like I always say, any dedicated movie buff MUST do what's necessary to be equipped for all-region play.

I saw Zatoichi vs Yojimbo a good while back and thought it was "meh"
