The first film is Francesco Rosi's The Moment of Truth. As far as English speakers are concerned, this was a very difficult film to track down before Blu-ray came to exist. It is an extraordinary film.

Thank you sir. I decided to give this one a try.

I see that Amazon has some CC movies at a reasonable price right now (The Moment of Truth is around $20 there).

Personally, I'd rank it as Coppola's best, and I'd say Hackman's performance is one of the all time great performances - probably the second best of the 70s.
I'm one of those who found it a snooze, Hackman's performance notwithstanding. And I generally like Coppola's films. The Conversation just didn't work for me.

No, I don't keep them sealed. I do collect the stickers with the signatures though and throw out the stickers without the signatures.

Hey Guys, Just got home from B & N and cracked open my Frances Ha only to find one disc in the case. The dvd disc was not in it. Has this ever happened to anyone else with this release or any other Criterion release? Don't really need the dvd but I guess I did pay for it.

Yes, I was aware of that. I wanted to buy this at another B&N here but at that location the sticker was also covered by the price tag. So I just bit the bullet and bought this anyway. I'm going to try my best to peel the price tag off the sticker somehow without ruining it (only if it has a Steve McQueen signature - which I think it may).

I save the Director Approved Edition signature stickers, but not the regular ones.

A user has reported a lot of noise and other faults with her recently arrived Criterion BD of Seconds (see post in the movie's link below). Has anyone else met with these or other problems with this disc?

It is still in my 'to get' list.

Default Seven Samurai

This is about the technical aspects of the blu-ray, NOT the movie itself.

I got the Criterion Seven Samurai yesterday. I had read so much praise for this version, it was one of the reasons I wanted a blu-ray player. But my high expectations set me up for disappointment.

The picture is incredibly grainy and there is way too much film damage. The opening credit sequence alone--which is literally supposed to be black and white--has a number of pixel errors. The audio is unimpressive too, but something I got used to. The release isn't bad per se, but underwhelming for such an acclaimed masterpiece.

Does anyone know how Criterion's version compares to the Japanese release? The Japanese blu-ray of Hidden Fortress, for example, is so clear, it looks like a modern movie shot in black-and-white. (And not to hate on Criterion, their Samurai Trilogy is excellent.)

Well, one has to put up with certain limitations. Apparently that's how the source looks. I've read somewhere that Criterion went the route of keeping the image as sharp and clear as possible instead of softening it to camouflage the damage as they did with the DVD.

A region free Eraserhead is now selling for 11.62 Euros, shipped to the U.S. from Germany's Amazon. I researched this once and believe it's a definitive release, which has to have the "Stories" documentary (Lynch talking for about an hour about the making of Eraserhead). I ordered it and will report back whether it has the documentary after seeing it. According to its entry in the database, it has optional German subs.

edit: Botched embedding the link in the picture, so it's: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Erase...Blu-ray/34251/

If you want, you might use the price drop on this (it's usually about 15 Euros, before shipping) as evidence that a Criterion release is coming. But I took the annual picture, with an "eraserhead" on the outside of the building (trying to climb in?) as evidence that it's iffy.

Amazon's shipping from Germany used to be a flat 10 Euros, if I remember correctly, or that may have been Italy, but 3.25 Euros is reasonable.

When Criterion has their flash sales, are their posters included? I'm looking at getting the Vivre sa vie and L'avventura prints, but shipping is really steep and I would hold off if I can get a deal down the road.

Just picked up

City Lights
Frances Ha
The Devils Backbone

I've already been to Barnes and Noble four times during the sale and I still can't get myself to pick up Shoah.

I don't understand why the source material would be that much worse than, say, Hidden Fortress.

Things like the white spots in the opening credits could easily have been removed. Seven Samurai is one of those great titles where fixing film damage manually would be worth the effort.

Anyone know how it compares to the Japanese release? Criterion's release isn't bad, but I'm not sure it deserves all the praise it's getting.
