Just a public service announcement: My copy of Walkabout played just fine when I first got it. Now, it freezes at the 49-50 minute mark. Comments from those on the other Criterion forum indicate this is a fairly common problem. If you bought a copy soon after it was released and haven't re-watched it since, I would recommend checking it out as it seems the discs are going sour.

It's a theme from a score I've heard many times before (from those 2 films especially). As for Pitt, he wasn't as distracting as I thought he would be. He sort of fit in with the characters. Funny though on how a friend of mine told me after the film we both went to see that nowadays there is more racism up north (esp. in Canada) than one thinks and Pitt's character was Canadian.

Yes, I think it is probably the best movie about slavery I've ever seen too. I think the cinematography was a highlight for sure. This is a film that doesn't need to be in the Criterion Collection but it earns everything it deserves.
More racism in Canada? I think somebody's been listening to Rob Ford again...or at least sharing his pipe.

I'd be curious about any recent polls done up there on such a controversial theme. No offense but I think Ford is a pretty sick man though.

Toronto is infamous in Canada for thinking its the "centre of the universe"... Rob Ford may be a wingnut but his antics are getting on all the late night talk shows, SNL, and now the ultimate, the blu-ray.com message boards. The folks in T.O. will be lapping up all the attention.

Happened to me when my gf tried to watch it this year for a research paper. But Criterion still replaced it for me even though I bought it on release.

Man that's low for Black Orpheus in my opinion, that film was just so vibrant and so much fun. Spy is great, really knocked me back when I got it recently.

Well I didn't get to post last night but here is my first impressions of Three Colors: Red.

The best film in the trilogy for me no doubt. Mesmerizing Irene Jacob, stunning cinematography, a jaw-dropping opening scene and one fantastic ending; this film had it all!

I also loved the first sequence with
[Show spoiler]the dog
as well, really touching scene.

Overall, this is one wonderful piece of work and IMO the best in the trilogy by a long mile.

5/5

I also shop at amazon too. B&N I had a bad experience with, so not again. I think CC dont ship to HK. I only buy 4-5 titles per order, so shipping per disc is still quite expensive.
yes CC don't ship to HK, so I usually use a courier company that ships stuff from US to HK in a pretty reasonable price.

Yes! I'm not the veteran collector around here, but if you use the price tracking tool on this site, you will find that most (actually all of them that I've tracked) Criterion titles dip to their lowest price on Amazon during late November and December. That's what I'm banking on. $35 or more gets you free shipping, so you can be sign sealed and delivered for 2 basic titles (for example) for $36. Not too bad. That's what I'm banking on.

Thanks, again for all the recommendations that keep coming in. Going to go with Paris, Texas and Fanny and Alexander. Possibly more. Will have to see.

I watched Three Colors: Blue last night. Amazing film! Highly recommended! Will definitely buy the set during this sale - along with The Double Life of Veronique. Can't wait so see the remaining two films of the trilogy.

9/10

I've also seen Walkabout the other day. It was way better than I thought it would be. Will be buying it as well.

8/10

And I revisited Blow Out. Liked it even more this time, it might be my favorite De Palma.

9/10

I personally liked it, but its not one of Bergmans best films IMO. Technically its a beautifully made film. With Gunnar Fischer at the helm you can always expect some wonderful cinematography and there are many of Bergman's regular actors involved. The story is intriguing and plays out nicely. Max Von Sydow is always fun to watch. I'll have to revisit the film, but I wasn't that impressed with the final few minutes of the film. Don't want to spoil anything so I'll leave it at that.

I am think of picking up one (or both) of those dvd box sets at B&N when their 40% coupon becomes active during the Black Friday weekend. (Each would only be $21.60 with a membership discount and the 40% coupon).
Personally I'd like to see the Josef von Sternberg boxset get a Blu upgrade.

Anyone else think that the booklet for Tokyo Story might have been much meatier had it not been for the two DVD discs that they had to cram into the digi-pack? This one's a pamphlet compared to all of my other Criterions.

I'm inclined to think that the Tokyo Story booklet is the same as the one that was released for the original DVD, but I might be mistaken. Just the same, I quite enjoyed that short read.

I much prefer disc content over booklet content.

Got 2 20% coupons in the mail, and another in my email. Picked up City Lights with one of the 3, and my member discount for $15. Trying to figure out my next move, maybe the John Cassavetes: Five Films set. Figure half off, plus 10%, and then 20%, should be a bilnd buy that's worth it.

Thoughts on John Cassavetes: Five Films??
