Finally made my trip to B&N today as I have to do a bit of walking and take two buses to get there. Picked up:

City Lights
Tokyo Story
The Spy Who Came Out of the Cold
To Be or Not to Be
Seconds
Eyes Without a Face

So I ended up picking up two more titles than I expected but was pleased with being able to not go overboard. This was my first time using coupons so handed a bunch to teller. My snail mail 20% coupons went through fine with just being scanned in. I had to explain to teller on my email coupon to manually type in code which worked! The biggest problem was my $75 gift card I gave to myself. Teller had to call over a manager to finally get the thing to work. Was getting a bit nervous there since I got that gift cert for the sole purpose of going into store to by Criterions. Upon checking my receipt after I actually got the 30% off Mastercard coupon applied and I paid in cash!!!

That's a sweet haul! All of these are 2013 favorites of mine.

To Be or Not to Be is such an underrated Criterion title. Most films do not mix comedy and adventure so adeptly.

Thoughts on John Cassavetes: Five Films??
I just bought the Cassavetes set last weekend and I can easily say that it was one of the best purchases I've ever made.
I say go for it!

Yeah.... more and more it's making it's way to the top of my list. Have to go back on the next pay day, before the sale ends.

I wish I was able to use my coupons
Oh well, the sets on my shelf now and that's all that matters!
The documentary A Constant Forge is worth the price of the set alone.
I also watched all the special features (aside from Opening Night cause I haven't seen the film yet) and also watched Shadows last night which looked really good.
You guys definitely won't regret it

Thanks for that one, it's on my Wishlist; if the price is right it'll be coming off said list!

Max Von Sydow is always fun to watch. I'll have to revisit the film, but I wasn't that impressed with the final few minutes of the film. Don't want to spoil anything so I'll leave it at that.
It didn't seem like the normal Bergman fair, the plot seemed like it might be more fun than some of his darker/moodier "self reflection"/"relationship assessing"/"faith challenging" titles that get so much love around here.

Likely $17.89, like all the other Criterion lightning deals.

Just saw Yamada Yōji's The Twilight Samurai on Netflix. What a terrific movie! I'm surprised to see that it doesn't appear to be on Blu-ray in the US (or anywhere that would include English subtitles).

Would love to see Criterion work their magic on this one...to be honest, the PQ on the transfer I watched on Netflix left a lot to be desired.

It's the first Yamada film I've seen. Anyone here who has seen this, and other films of his who can say whether the others are as good?

Any recommendations on how to approach the John Cassavettes set for someone that only knows the man from The Dirty Dozen? Is there a certain pecking order that the films would best be served in, including the documentaries?

Much thanks!

It's a very good film. The HK version does have English subtitles, and is fairly cheap at Yes Asia

The Hidden Blade is also excellent imo. Love and Honor is pretty good as well. These are the second and third films in his Samurai Trilogy. Kabei: Our Mother is also a great film.

Since you are a Friday the 13th fan, I think that you'll dig Kiss Me Deadly. It's a beautiful and intense film noir, and Quentin Tarantino drew heavy influence from it when he made Pulp Fiction.

From the quick browsing I have done already, it seems to be a really highly regarded Noir.....a genre which I do really like, but unfortunately don't own too much of. Thanks for the input, Im leaning towards keeping it.

Speaking of crazy sale prices...

As I posted yesterday, I bought a MacBook Air yesterday after my faithful PC laptop died. I decided to go with the 11" screen ($950) instead of the 13" screen ($1,150) in order to stay in some semblance of budget.

After having fun with the MacBook at home for several hours last night and earlier this afternoon, though, I decided that it would be worth shelling out the extra $200 to have the bigger screen, so I boxed up my 11" and took it back to Best Buy.

It turned out that the 13" screen MacBook Air had gone on sale today, and was selling for $975.

So, it only cost me $25 more to upgrade from the 11" to the 13" screen. Score!

Sorry for the hijacking, but I had to tell someone somewhere.

I should watch a happy Criterion title tonight to celebrate. Happy Criterion titles... Safety Last! comes to mind.
