Criterion's page lists movies by spine, but #699 is missing. It goes right from 698 King of the Hill to 700 Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Any thoughts on this?? Did I miss any discussion pertaining to this already?

I was thinking of grabbing Pale Flower from Barnes & Noble during lunch break to complete the sale month, but I stopped at a used store down the street first and found the Citizen Kane digibook in perfect condition, so that's where the money went instead. A fortuitous find, since I've been slowly grabbing Orson Welles films.

After my recent purchases of Citizen Kane, Tokyo Story, and Sunrise, I now have eight films on the Sight and Sound Top 10 list on Blu-ray. Not that this is specifically what I've been aiming for, but there's definitely a reason why these films have ranked so high on that list.

No laughing from me! Love that movie! I didn't realize it was coming out next week. I'll have to get on the ball and do some price comparing.

Like so many others, I've been buying way more blurays than usual over the last couple of weeks. I'm still thinking of ordering a couple more Criterions online before the B&N sale ends tonight. (I only bought 2 so far).

EDIT: FWIW, I ordered Tokyo Story as my 3rd and last bluray from this latest B&N 50% off sale. The other 2 were City Lights and Walkabout.

Most likely just a title has to be pushed back a month due to an unexpected delay or the like.

Wondering if the community would recommend Kurosawa's High and Low for me as a blind buy. I definitely want to see it, but my hopes are getting rather high for it and I'm considering buying it instead of borrowing it.

I've now seen 3 Kurosawa films. After The Third Man, Ikiru is probably my second favorite Criterion release. I watched Yojimbo and although the Samurai genre is not for me, I certainly marveled at Kurosawa's shot composition.

I've recently enjoyed some Melville and also Malle's Elevator to the Gallows. I'm kind of thinking that High and Low might be a bit like those films, but with the Kurosawa magic.

There are still many Criterion titles on my to buy list. Many of you might give your approval, but should I prioritize buying this one? Thoughts?

Definitely rent it beforehand. Some of us weren't taken by it the way we were with the films by Chaplin and Keaton. I've seen a couple other Lloyd films, but it seems Safety Last is my least favorite. I haven't seen the supplements yet, but I'm sure there is at least some value there.

While would you get laughed at? It's a fantastic and classic film and I'm buying it on day 1.

I'm just going to hit the Best Buy down the street, in all likelihood, since the price should be right on the day of release. It's too bad that the Rewards Points from my recent MacBook purchase will not surface by then, but that's alright.

I sooooooo wanted to love this film but was badly let down. Don't get me wrong, I didn't hate it and I've still to watch the film again with the audio commentary, something I hope will give me a better understanding of the film. I just found some of the "gags" too drawn out.

SAFETY LAST is a film that works best with a large audience and a live score (of course that goes for virtually any silent film, as they were all shot and edited with that in mind, and Lloyd actually previewed his features with audiences so he could re-edit before release to adjust for bigger or smaller laughs than expected). Still, I much prefer Lloyd's THE KID BROTHER and THE FRESHMAN, and several of his other films over SAFETY LAST. With time and luck, the rest of his output will eventually be on Criterion Blu-rays along with Chaplin's complete output. Luckily we've already got nearly every Keaton film on nice Blu-ray editions from Kino (Warner owns his MGM productions and Sony owns his Columbia shorts, so hopefully they'll both figure out there's a market for them in HD).
