If I had thought ahead I should have brought my Region 2 player from the UK in March

Unfortunately, the Unpopular movie opinions thread has become a trolling ground, whereas this Criterion thread is a relatively safe haven of intellectual discussion.

When should we expect March announcements? Criterion usually aims for the middle of the month for new announcements.

[Show spoiler]Kris went to the station because there was debate on if the "guests" were real, or just hallucinations created by the planet. The crew made the planet made, in essence by exposing it to radiation as an experiment correct? The "guests" were almost like a retaliation.

Also, the ending, after Hari goes away for good, he says he's returning back to Earth as his mission is now complete. He gets home and immediately something is wrong. For 1, it's raining in the house and his dad doesn't seen to care. Then the camera zooms out and he's still on Solaris on 1 of the new islands that was created as a result of the "annihilator" ? If he was going back to earth, how did he end up on the planet?

If anyone could answer those 2 questions, I'd be most appreciative!
Here are my answers, although others may have completely different and equally valid interpretations:

[Show spoiler] As for the first question: I believe the guests occurred after the researches subjected the ocean to radiation (this part is fuzzy in my memory, because I know they contemplate bombing the surface with intense radiation in order to cease the creation of the memory avatars). It could be seen as a retaliation, but that is only looking at the guests as though they are a bad thing (they certainly turn out to be very disturbing and emotionally trying, even causing suicide, but that doesn't mean it was the intent of the planet). There is another idea that, IIRC, is discussed briefly in the film. The humans attempted to elicit a response from the planet. In turn, the sentient planet attempts to elicit a response from the humans utilizing their most coveted/powerful memories. It's almost like the humans created this expensive and elaborate mission to conduct experiments and understand the planet when in reality the planet is conducting experiments on the researchers.

Second question: I believe when he says he is returning to earth, he means he is returning to the earth that he wants to return to: an earth where his father is still alive and where he can perhaps be reunited--again--with Hari. He has travelled across the galaxy simply to return to his most emotionally peaceful place.

I won't deny that he's a great director and Late Spring is still a wonderful film but Tokyo Story, recently rated the #3 film of all time by Sight & Sound, just didn't do much for me the second time through. I'm guessing most of his films will turn out to be the same way if I re-watch them: better left as "one and done".

I'll bet I'm in the extreme minority with this opinion and maybe it's better suited for the Unpopular movie opinions thread...
While I've only seen a handful of Ozu films (Late Spring, Tokyo Story, Tokyo Twilight, Floating Weeds, Early Spring, Equinox Flower), I believe Tokyo Story is one of the weakest. However, this is only after one viewing, and I still enjoyed it quite a bit.

And, since no one asked, I believe 'Late Spring' is definitely the best of his I've seen followed by 'Tokyo Twilight' (the movie that got me into Ozu).

It seems to be whenever they please.

They usually do it around the time Best Buy offers their 50% off sale (it's going on now; this is the second year in a row).

I know for certain that they don't price match during the BN or Criterion.com 50% off sales.

Best Buy is a waste of time here in Canada and bestbuy.com does not deliver outside the US

People here are a great source of information when a sale is happening so I'll keep checking the threads There are always films on my To Buy list. If there is money in the pot, that is another question

Just finished Kiss Me Deadly ..

I really liked it ... I need to watch it again ... Classic Noir. Interesting because the story is really only exposed through the 1st person perspective of the main character ... But I guess that is typical of most detective/private eye yarns.

I think I enjoyed Sweet Smell of Success a bit more .. But this film had some really cool camera choices and a no nonsense script.

Wish it pushed a bit darker in tone ..but that is probably just a subjective observation.

8/10
