Bergman, Tarkovsky, Fellini and Bresson are my top directors. A criterion release of Persona is mana from Heaven for me. The US DVD release was bitterly cropped. March cannot come any sooner. It will be really hard to top that release. |

I saw TIFF's Cronenberg exhibition today and I really hope they tour this thing. It was a very cool experience. The lack of focus on his later works was a little disappointing, I think A History of Violence had the smallest section after his pre-Shivers works. It was pretty surreal seeing stuff like the Telepod from The Fly or a Mugwump from Naked Lunch (the one prop we were actually able to take a picture of or with).

One of the great things about Europeans is that they are very creative which clearly shows in their art, films, food... that beauty & rawness is still intact even in these modern times.
Persona will be day-one for me and if they ever decide to release Scenes from a Marriage on Blu-ray... I'll be so happy - probably do the chicken dance. ![]() |

In hindsight I wish I had given the exhibit a little more time, but we had tickets to a master class and wanted to secure good seats. At least I got a photo with the mugwump. |

@Pro-B: I was lucky enough to see Lovers on the Bridge on film at my local Art Gallery last year. It was truly stunning and yeah, couldn't accept SD for it now.
@GreatOwl: There's an Australian release of La Dolce Vita out this week incidentally from Umbrella Entertainment. While Aus releases rarely get official reviews on this site, Umbrella has had a handful, but lacking that, the early word is that it has great PQ/AQ. It retails at only $AU19.99, not sure what postage is for you guys though. It's one of my favourite films of all time, and moved me/changed my view of the world probably more than any other film, so I'll be picking it up very soon. As long as the Australian releases are region free, I'm all good for them. I'll probably hold my horses before pulling the trigger on La Dolce Vita, though, since I suspect that it'll be here in my neck of the woods soon. (Unrelated, but I've decided to stop putting movie titles in bold font in my posts, since it's cumbersome to do so if I'm typing on my iPhone, and I like uniformity. Old habits are hard to break, though.) Last edited by The Great Owl; 01-05-2014 at 04:51 PM. |

Also the filming in Godard's film is different than Hollywood studio films of the past. There is more outside filming and jump cuts (supposedly he accidentally invented this technique). The importance of style is given more ground than before; the tone of film noir movies actual inspired many of the French New Wave directors. So Bob Le Flambleur and Breathless has this cool, laid back style. And of course, Jean Seberg is just gorgeous. I would have definitely bought Herald Tribune everyday, if she was selling the newspaper. |
