Unless they're really committing to the April Fool's joke it looks like a very light month.
Still, I'm always up for more Lars and while Charley Varrick is the Don Siegel for which I've been pining I'll probably give Cell Block 11 a look at some point. |

It seems like they are upgrading their some of their much earlier releases. It wouldn't surprise me to see more *early spine* titles in the coming months..
I really hope they release The Third Man again so people wont spend an obscene amount for it. None of the titles sound too terribly interesting to me..but that's how it goes...I save money this way ! ![]() |

Il Sorpasso & Master of the House are the only ones to make it to my list.
Disappointed to see no upgraded Doinel Box Set ![]() ![]() |

Well, I have to be honest here and say that the new announcements for April don't blow me away by any means. I'm not a fan of Lars Von Trier but I think Breaking the Waves is the most exciting release for April from what I can tell. Slightly disappointed but the first 3 months of 2014 have so many good releases, its ok to have a "down" month.

I held off on upgrading my old DVD of The 400 Blows in anticipation of a possible upgrade of The Adventures of Antoine Doinel box set in its entirety.
I'm going to pull the trigger on The 400 Blows after it comes out in April, though, because this may be an indicator that the other films aren't on the horizon. |

My advice to all in this thread...
1. Buy Don Siegel's Private Hell 36 and watch it before April. 2. Buy Don Siegel's Riot in Cell Block 11 in April. Private Hell 36 is an Olive Films title, but here's the review that I posted for the movie. It's good. It's really good. In fact, it's probably one of my top ten film noir movies. Don Siegel is best known for his work with Clint Eastwood (The Beguiled, Dirty Harry, Escape from Alcatraz, etc.), but his early flicks are equally amazing. Ann Margret was beautiful. She did a couple of films with Dino Risi and they are all excellent. The Tiger and the Pussycat is a riot.
It is quite disappointing that Criterion, or some of the European labels for that matter, have not invested into securing the rights to some of the classic Italian comedies from the post-war era. There was a time when the Italians were very sarcastic (and very inventive) and a lot of the comedies that were done in Italy during the late 50s-70s have not been matched. Contemporary Italian comedies have a very different flavor, strongly influenced by the lax Adriano Celentano-esque style of comedy. Not bad, but not the same as the work the likes of Risi and Lattuada did. By the way, this is a really nice film with Ann Margret, and Jean-Louis from Il Sorpasso, that was recently released through the MGM MOD program. Soundtrack by the great Michel Legrand (La Piscine, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Thomas Crown Affair, Bay of Angels) https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ht=outside+man ![]() Pro-B Last edited by pro-bassoonist; 01-15-2014 at 09:49 PM. |
