I know some people love the digipacks and others do not. Criterion is not going to make everyone happy. The only time they had EVERYBODY hating the packaging was the initial blu-ray cardboard.
The new cardboard digipaks are sturdy for what they are, and the artwork on the ones that I own is quite remarkable. The artwork on my Jules and Jim digipak is really something else.

Yesterday, though, I had Jules and Jim sitting underneath my Scream Factory copy of Cat People in my Blu-ray stack, and I noticed that the spine of the digipak is twice as wide as the spine of the Amaray case Blu-ray. The fact that these new digipaks take up enough space for two other Blu-rays is the only real grievance of mine, aside from the fact that I'm compelled to buy them in person to make sure that the digipak is in good condition.

If I buy it in good condition, though, then it will generally stay in good condition. I have cardboard digipak CDs that I bought back in the 1990s that still look brand new.

Ideally, I'd love to see Criterion release these three or four-disc packages in plastic cases lined with slipboxes, sort of like The Godfather Collection.

Alright, today's the day we learn the artwork and special features of the already said titles. I don't know why I'm so excited.

Since I was thinking just now about Criterion cases, I went over to the Casetopia website and placed an order for 10 Scanavo Criterion Double-Disc Blu-ray Plastic cases for $12.66, including shipping.

My plastic double-disc cases for City Lights and Thief are both slightly jacked up, and I've been meaning to replace them. I'm sure that other damaged plastic double-disc cases will be coming down the pipes in the future, so it'll be good to have a stack of replacements at hand.

personally I don't really like any type of cardboard packaging because in the current etail/retail environment it's nearly impossible to get a copy that doesn't have rounded corners or dented corners or spine issues., etc. etc.
It's just frustrating to get these releases in bubble mailers and have them basically destroyed during shipping.
I feel any company--not just Criterion--should realize this reality and stick with plastic cases for all releases; plain and simple.
just my 2 cents worth.
(btw: the Criterion plastic cases for the dual releases seem to have inherent design flaws that lead to the booklets getting severely gutted in the middle. There's simply no way to avoid it from looking at my City Lights blu-ray. Where the case closes there are tiny plastic "daggers" that cut right into the booklet. It seems clear that proper testing of all elements in place was not done before these releases were approved, and that's a real shame.
somebody clearly dropped the ball imo.)
I know people wish other people wouldn't talk about packaging so much, but these issues make it an unavoidable subject. These bds are simply too costly to not be packaged competently, and imo Criterion should drop ALL cardboard packaging PERMANENTLY.

Someone said that Criterion posted on Facebook last Friday that the announcements would be tomorrow.

Ok, it is a holiday for most businesses, so that makes sense.

Thanks!

After I read this, the INXS song, "Tiny Daggers", started going through my head, and I cannot get it out of my head.

Anyway, my plastic case of City Lights is warped somewhat, and one side does not quite close properly.
My plastic case of Thief has something broken off on one end.

Thankfully, the Rififi case is in great condition.

Paper vs plastic... Well the digipacks are cool to me they seem more stable then those old ones. I guess to cut overhead to keep criterion in business I'm cool with it

I so want to get this, but they said when they announced it that a "special edition" would follow. So they are obviously releasing this version due to the awards buzz it got, but now I'm left wondering when they'll release the full treatment for this.

I'll gladly double dip for that
When Fantastic Mr. Fox was announced, I thought it was a bit annoying seeing as I had to get rid of the original release I had bought 7 months ago.

But then I got to thinking that the original release has various language tracks and subtitles, so I decided to keep it (I'm still going to get the Criterion release, obviously).

So if Moonrise Kingdom is released through Criterion, I can say the same.

I still think it kind of sucks that Fantastic Mr. Fox didn't get the Eric Anderson artwork that all previous Wes Anderson Criterion releases have gotten. Maybe he never made anything for it during the pre-production stages? Hopefully he did for Moonrise Kingdom.

Strongly agree with your post. The criterion bds are definitely pricey; to not get a good package with the bd is absurd.

Since I have been participating in this forum, my comments about criterion as a company have been positive, but this move towards digipaks really has push me to consider first day purchases (I usually do not wait for sales).

If it was it'd possibly need to be in a Benjamin Button scenario where Criterion is very minimally involved in production, which in the long run is not optimal.
I thought David Prior did an amazing job with the bonus features. He is great when it comes to making them. He's also done a great job with Zodiac, The Social Network, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It's funny because those last two titles had Digipack packaging with interesting artwork. And now Criterion is starting to release more and more Digipack packaging with their releases.

To me, the only thing not "Criterion" about The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is the packaging, really.

I like Digipacks as well, but I wish Criterion would stick to the clear cases, as they give it a more "luxe" feel. And the Digipacks they release are bulky. At least with the clear cases, if they had 3 hubs, one could get rid of the DVDs and buy the single disc clear cases from them. It saves space, and one can get rid of the DVDs.

I know we had the titles leak, but with the holiday today is Criterion going to wait until tomorrow to officially announce and detail the May releases?
