Trying to hold off buying those knowing they have a good chance to be Criterions down the road...

So have a few hours alone tonight while the wife is out at a meeting.., going to try to slip in a recent Criterion purchase, but not sure what to watch. Anyone suggestions out of the following (i'm leaning toward Thief)

I saw Elevator to the Gallows, Au Revoir les Enfants (just added the blu to my collection, too) and Murmur of the Heart. I am ranking them 16th, 4th, and 18th, respectively, out of 41 recent Criterion titles I've seen. considering Criterion's typical pedigree, I'd say that means I've loved his work. I don't know if many people have seen Murmur of the Heart. The DVD transfer is solid. Here is a brief and completely spoiler free review I wrote for another site:

"Somewhat odd, yet endearing coming of age story about a teenage boy and the emotional bond shared between the boy and his mother. Malle's gentle handling of delicate thematic material and taut pacing in the film's final hour more than make up for the fact that the first half narrative, while never dull, does meander a bit. Recommended!"

I said 'recommended' then. Now I'm saying 'highly recommended.' I decided to pick up Lacombe, Lucien from the libary today. I feel pretty strongly that I am going to really like it!

I've only seen the theatrical thus far, but my reasoning was that if I watch the full TV version first, the material from the theatrical would be redundant the second time around. Since I've only watched the theatrical, I can now go into the TV version with the anticipation of new content.

Plus, I feel as though it's harder to pinpoint "what is missing" from the shorter cut, and easier to see "what scenes are new" as one watches the longer cut after the shorter.

I was in somewhat of a time crunch recently with my wife being occupied with something else.. (just like your situation ) and I watched The 39 Steps. I believe that it is only like 90 minutes, so that allows for bathroom breaks and whatnot. My fav, though, is either Thief or Breathless. Have fun. My wife is leaving next week for a business trip, so maybe I'll throw the same question out to the forum in a few days!

I have over 20 titles that I have still not viewed so I am waiting for the B&N sale and I am starting to be more selective with my Criterion purchases because I don't have enough time in the day to watch them along with everything else I do.

ditto!!! i remember seeing the Criterion banner and spending hours sifting through their early website. Chasing Amy will always be my gateway to a word of cinema I otherwise might not have ever appreciated.

Thanks, 39 Steps was high on the list as well, but I think Thief may win out. In the mood for a good crime movie... "Where's the Van??"! And always nice to have time alone time with the TV.

Thanks, I've seen this before, but was in the theater and just remembered it was long. Hated it the first time, but think I've come around more to war movies since then..

The theatrical cut tends to be more bleak and unrelenting while the TV version's runtime allows for smaller moments. You can connect to the individual characters more. It also contains those bleak and unrelenting moments but there is an additional fantastical element that is lacking in the theatrical cut. I prefer the TV cut. I would say every Bergman film that has a television cut is better in the longer version (Fanny & Alexander, Scenes from a Marriage, Face to Face).

Tokyo Story REALLY impressed me but it's about 2 1/2 hours long. Breathless seemed like it was a 5 hour movie (worst blind buy of any type or format for me). I'd go with 39 Steps.
