Default Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman

Would anyone recommend this, including non-martial arts fans? The collector's box set looks beautiful, but it's $160 price tag is making me think twice.

This is, of course, an excellent idea.

Would Tokyo Story be a good intro to Ozu?

The Hoaglund subtitles are more stylized, approaching something like Shakespearean dialogue, but not exactly, while the Richie subtitles are a bit more straightforward. I'd say go with the Richie subtitles for your first viewing unless you're watching this film having memorized Macbeth. Both subtitles tracks are good and give a slightly different viewing experience. Oh and it's a great film so you'll definitely be watching it more than once, eventually. No need to select a subtitle track thinking it will be the only version of the subtitles you'll ever see.

It's his most accessible film out of the two that I have seen (Tokyo Story, Late Spring).

I highly recommend the film, it's beautiful and poignant.

I would say no. I think Late Spring is the better introduction.

I think it's a pretty good neo-noir if not my favorite Nolan (The Prestige and Memento).

I heard that Make Way For Tomorrow was the inspiration for Tokyo Story, which makes me want to check it out even more.

Perhaps Criterion will release it down the road?

Thanks for the recommendation! I will try my best to check it out after I watch Late Spring (whenever that may be).

I loved Following. I loved it much more than Memento actually. Both films are sort of similar in that Nolan uses the non-linear time vehicle to drive the narrative. SUPERB movie all around. Worth every penny.

I've been tempted to get Following, especially since I tend to prefer his non-Batman work. I just might give it a shot, soon.

I tried to post mine for sale...no interest from anyone. Tossing it will be most likely for me.

They have, just not on blu. Can't see them in a rush to upgrade, but it's possible. But my all accounts the MoC is wonderful.

It may sound like a lot to spend $160 on a set, but when you pro-rate that over 25 films that comes to just $6.40 per film (with both Blu-ray and DVD versions) and there's nearly a full disc of bonus features. Not bad at all for Criterion quality. I decided to blind-buy it (no pun intended, or maybe just sort of intended!) on Criterion's half-price flash sale last month when it was only $112, and it just arrived yesterday. So far I've already watched the first five films and am enjoying them immensely.

I wouldn't call myself particuarly a martial-arts fan, but these films are generally great formula morality plays in the same way the best Westerns are, and they may especially seem very reminiscent of the 1960s spaghetti westerns that were coming out around the same time. The story lines are also a lot like modern yakuza gangster films except that they're set in the mid-1800s instead of the present. You know pretty much what's going to happen but it's all done with so much style that you can't wait to see the next one. The widescreen photography is beautifully composed and the HD transfers are outstanding. The first two look great in rich, crisp black-and-white, and the rest are very nicely designed to take advantage of color.

If you like films along the lines of Kurosawa's YOJIMBO and SANJURO, SEVEN SAMURAI, the SAMURAI trilogy, THREE OUTLAW SAMURAI, etc., you should feel right at home. (I can't wait until I get to ZATOICHI MEETS YOJIMBO!) The martial arts scenes are certainly showcases, but don't take up a majority of the plot, which is often quite intricate with plenty of Japanese philosophy along the way (though not so much as in the SAMURAI trilogy).

I would be both ecstatic and frightened if I ever came across a golden ticket. Half of this forum alone would send assassins after my head.
